“Gramps” Killeen
Paul “Killer” Killeen is now a proud grandpa. He joins a growing list of grandfathers playing on tour. His daughter gave birth to he and Judy’s first grandchild last week with “Gramps” in attendace between rounds in Fairmount Hot Springs. Grampa recorded rounds of 83 at Fairmount and The Springs @ Radium. The baby is healthy, weighing in a 8 lbs.
See below for your dinner assignments!
Four Way Tie @ The Falls
The hilly Ted Locke designed Chilliwack course took its toll as no PGA member was able to match par at The Falls, the 7th and second last event for the 2003 PGA season. Four players managed one over par 72’s. Dick Bourbonais, Bob Carter, Tom Carter and Doug Player all managed their way to respectable 72’s. The event did little to separate the Green Jacket contenders as Dick Burns and Carter (Tom) lead with slight margins over Bourbonais and Player. With only the Squamish Calcutta left on the 2003 fixture sheet it looks like the last event will be a dogfight.
Bourbonais Double Trouble
The aforementioned Bourbonais hooked up with Blair Murdoch to produce 29 points to win the Olympic-putting contest on the quick and slick Falls greens. Chasing them were the teams of Larry Brown and Daryl Gjernes who produced 24 points and Carter with Ron Stinson who managed 20 points. Charlie “Tuna” Phipps was high single for the Olympic with 17 points but partner Ken Sherk had a tough day on the greens and the Tuna’s hot putting day went mostly un-noticed except for the hand gestures Phipps made toward the offending party during on the 19th hole.
Oh Calcutta!!
The year-end Calcutta teams for the season ending event to be held Saturday June 28th at Squamish Valley Golf Club were announced after play on Saturday. The teams have almost equal net handicaps and the competition is expected to be fierce. Each team has purchased itself for 320.00 so a total of 1,620.00 in prize money is up for grabs with 800.00 going to the winning team. The runners-up will split 500.00 while the 3rd place squad will share 300.00. Play at Squamish begins at 10 am.
Squamish Calcutta - Teams and Times
As released at the 19th hole at the Falls event, here are the official Calcutta teams for the season ending annual Calcutta to be played from the Blue tees at the 6,300 yard Squamish Valley Golf Club on Saturday June 28th. The captain of each squad appears in capitals.

CALCUTTA ANALYSIS
Although each team have almost identical total handicaps and we expect the competition to be fierce we feel compelled to analyze each team and rate their chances for success.
#1 - Team Quinn - Captain Quinn, a former Green Jacket winner, by his own admission has not had a good season but he feels “ready to breakout” and his supporting cast of the Matheson, who has been pretty solid this year, rookie Stinson also looking to break a slump. Ex-commish Len Slade who spent time recently practicing and playing in Palm Springs appears to be the team to beat.
#2 - Team Bourbonais - Bourbonais, in the thick of the Green Jacket race yet again, seemingly always rises to the occasion so look for his team to push Quinn’s bunch. “BeerHead” Player, a shoo-in for Rookie of the Year, is also in the Green Jacket race and Dr. Gjernes & “Killer” Killeen have had solid years and are the type of players who can get on a roll and make pars and birdies.
#3 - Team Burns - a.k.a. Team Merrick. Dick “Dogmeat” Burns sits tied atop the Green Jacket standings. He has turned in some wonderful performances this year. Performances we have come to expect only from the Tuna. His natural tendency to “teach” while on the course can only help his team. Blair Murdoch played on the winning Calcutta team last year and brings experience to the proceedings as does the smooth swinging Stats man Dave Backie. Their dark horse contributor might be the much-maligned Jim “all day” Lanyon who showed at the Tripper Cup matches that he is a competitor.
#4 - Team Carter - Carter who sits tied with Burns atop the Green jacket standings has a capable team with lots of winning Calcutta experience. “Duke” Molinski has had great success in the Calcuttas over the years and the squad will rely on his savvy and experience. Dr. Overgaard brings a long ball and lots of emotion while Mr. David Rice is one of the finest big money players on Howe St.
#5 - Team Phipps - The “Tuna”, last years Green Jacket champion, has struggled (for him) at times this year. Karma has teamed Ken Sherk the long hitting 25 ‘cap with the Tuna yet again but Sherk, a member at Squamish, knows the course well and may surprise. Rookie Bob Garries has gathered momentum after a slow start to the year and looks to do some damage at the Calcutta. Hugh “DogBreath” Taylor has quietly put together a solid year and Captain Phipps will be looking for lots of support from one of the tour’s heavy weights.

Burns’s 75 matched the year best round and he was also the medalist in the separate 36 hole individual competition with a net score of 6 under 138. The North Van squad got out to a good start on day one of the best ball doubles matches and led 11-4 going into Sunday’s singles. They were led on day one by Larry Brown whose net 72 at the rugged Fairview Mtn track was leading the individual event after the first round and as a team meshed together much quicker and soundly beat the World squad in most of the pairings.
The day two highlight was Burns’ 75. The North Van captain who put himself out in the first group to inspire his team did just that closing out his rival, Ron Stinson, early in the proceedings for a 3-0 win. Hugh Taylor, who finished tied for second with Dick Bourbonais in the individual event, gave the World team reason for hope also playing in the first group with a solid round to beat Larry Brown 3-0. The 7 point gap earned by North Van during the day one team matches proved to much for the World team to overcome despite good rounds posted by Doug Quinn and Bourbonais among others. The difference may have come down to the match between North Van’s Jim Lanyon and the Commissioner Tom Carter who was also captaining the World team. Lanyon got off to a par-birdie-par start, refused to allow Carter into his “kitchen”, ignored all comments about his “momma” and fashioned a 1up-1up-2up win over the Commissioner.
Team North Van won 380.00 for its efforts. The World team walked away with zero.
Hooks ‘n slices...........ex-Commissioner Phil Langley was a late addition to the proceedings and helped North Van win the matches despite being hampered by a bad back............Taylor, who is known as “Dogballs” among other monikers, was tagged “Dogbreath” by Team North Van’s Bob Molinski, it is a name that is likely to stick.........rookie Bob Garries had a good weekend and appears to have found a home on the PGA tour........thanks to Doug Sarkissian for his good nature while subbing for Ken Sherk.......thanks also to Brad Aie aka:Mr. Vowel for driving in from Kamloops to spare......the Tripper Cup Matches will be contested each year during the tour’s annual trip........next up is The Falls on Saturday June 14th.....first tee time is 10 am.........
PGA Next Stop: The Falls The PGA will head to Chilliwack on Saturday, June 14th to play the Ted Locke designed undulating course in the east Chilliwack hills. The Falls was voted BC’s best new course in 1997 by Score Golf magazine and has developed into a quality course. This will be our 7th(2nd last) event to the 2003 season. The rules for the day will be the same as the on the Oliver trip:
1. summer rules
2. play all hazards as lateral
3. triple bogey max score
Green Jacket Race Director of Statistics Dave Backie, has released data in regard to this year’s race for the coveted Green Jacket, emblematic of the year’s finest player. Past winners include Doug Quinn, Dick Bourbonais and Charlie “Tuna” Phipps. This year only Bourbonais is currently in a position to see if the jacket fits but with 2 events left green could look good on any number of tour members. The best 5 of 8 rounds count. Mr. Backie has compiled his stats using the best 3 of 6 events so far.
1. Burns 205 10. Killeen 216
2. Carter 206 11. Backie 220
3. Molinski 207 12. Stinson 221
4.Bourbonais 210 13. Quinn 222
4. Player 210 13. Murdoch 222
6. Matheson 211 15. Brown 225
7. Taylor 212 17. Overgaard 227
8. Gjernes 213 18. Lanyon 230
8. Phipps - 213 19. Sherk 232
Calcutta Teams As is our tradition the teams for the year end Calcutta to be played June 28th at Squamish Golf Club will be announced at the 19th hole at The Falls. The year end Awards Dinner BBQ will be held at Dick Burns’ home. Dick Bourbonais, the Director of Awards, will once again be communicating to everyone their food responsibilities as in past years. The main part of the menu will be “Surf n Turf”. The tour will be providing the salmon and steaks but since our funds are pretty well exhausted it will be BYOB.
Returning Tuna Plateaus at Westwood Charlie “Tuna” Phipps returning from a golf training stint in Mexico and San Diego blistered the Coquitlam mountainside course with a net 68 (75 gross!) to win his first PGA event of the 2003 season. Last year’s Green Jacket winner took advantage of the soft conditions to “roll his rock”, and hit fairways and greens to post the years best round so far. After missing the last two events The Tuna has served notice that he may once again be slipping on the Green Jacket in June.
In what is becoming an alarming habit Paul “Killer” Killeen was once again the runner-up firing a solid net 70. It was Killeen’s second consecutive runner up finish and puts him firmly in the Green Jacket hunt. The Phipps led team consisting of Tuna, Jim Lanyon, Darryl Gjernes and Dave Overgaard won the Vienna Waltz team game. 1-2-3......1-2-3......perhaps a swing thought many of us could use?
IN THE WOODS........again, many kudos to Larry Brown for making the arrangements for Westwood.........everything was first class and the staff looked after us impeccably........Westwood will no doubt become a regular stop on tour..........the other regulars returning to the tour did not fair as well as the Tuna, both Brown and Dick Bourbonais fired net 76’s to finish in the middle of the pack.........handicaps have been adjusted for the Tripper Cup matches.......
PGA Visits Westwood Plateau -

Please Note Tee-Off Time Change*
The PGA will visit the Michael Hurdzan designed Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam for the first time this Saturday May 24th. Hurdzan leapt into the golf consciousness after he designed The Devil's Pulpit and The Devil's Paintbrush, a world renowned facility outside of Toronto developed by the creators of "Trivial Pursuit". . He is the current premier Canadian golf course architect and has won several awards for his work both in Canada and the US. Westwood has garnered its share of awards including a place in the top 10 public play venues in Canada. Check out their web-site at www.westwoodplateaugolf.bc.ca.
*PLAY BEGINS AT 9:30 AM (not 10 am as previously posted) Please arrive early in order to take advantage of free practice balls. Our green fees also include carts and lunch afterward.
Tap ins........Bourbonais, Brown and Phipps all return to the tour at Westwood......our 20th man will be Bob Carter...... it will be the first time this season that all 19 regulars have played at the same event........Brad Aie, a pal of Ron Stinson, has been recruited to spare on the trip to Oliver May 31 - June 1 but we are still looking for one more spare.........the Commissioner and Web-Master (Carter & Taylor) returned from a scouting mission on the long weekend to check out Fairview and Inkameep......Fairview is in outstanding condition while Inkameep just had its greens punched and sanded (a week prior to the long weekend) but should be in excellent shape two weeks hence.........the current weather forecast for Saturday is iffy.......lets hope it improves by Saturday........

Oliver Trip Update
We have booked at the Belair Cedar Resort in Oliver for Sat. May 31st for everyone. The following tour members indicated they also wanted to stay Friday May 30th as well so rooms have been booked for them for Friday night:
Player/Brown
Burns/Garries
Taylor/Stinson
Carter/Overgaard
Killeen/Phipps
If your name is not on the above list and you wish to stay Friday night please call Gary Mathers @ 1-800-801-0999. Please tell him you are with the PGA group. The whole area is extremely busy so call quickly to avoid any disappointment. The Cactus Tree (1-800-449-8617) and the South Wind (1-800-661-9922) may have rooms available for Friday night as well.
The Belair Cedar Resort is located ½ kilometre from downtown at 33858 Hwy 97. The motel is located in an orchard and features large outdoor pool, hot tub, cable TV
They even feature on Saturday nights a "bring your own steak bbq" - the cost is 10.00 and they provide: baked beans, baked potato, salad, garlic bread, condiments
Plus they cook your steak (or chicken etc.) to your specified taste. The facility is family owned and operated and likely a little quirky. We will discuss their bbq offer at the 19th hole at Westwood Plateau and vote to stay at the Belair for dinner or go out for dinner Saturday evening. The local restaurants will be investigated.
Oliver Golf
For those of you coming up on Saturday morning we are playing Fairview Mountain on Saturday. Our first tee time is 12:45 pm. Please time your trip to arrive at the course no later than 12:15 pm. It will take about 5 hours to drive from Vancouver. Our Sunday round is at Inkameep Canyon - first tee time 8:30 am. The Belair is 5 minutes from Inkameep. Stay tuned for the team game.
Matheson Scores at Swan-e-set
After the usual waiting the PGA seems to always put up with a Swan-e-set, Rod Matheson took advantage on an excellent spring day to card a net 2 under 70 to win the third PGA event of the season. "Rocket" Rod who had to leave immediately after the round to attend his Mom's 80th birthday party, used cunning strategy and a hot 4 wood to keep the ball in play and take his first win of the year. Tied for second place with net 71's were Paul Killeen and Tom Carter. Please see "scores" for details.
Team Burns "a bunch of Fags!" - More Sanctions Levied
In the "Faggot" team event the squad that was predicted to win did just that. The squad captained by Dick Burns along with Ken Sherk, Hugh Taylor and Doug Quinn kept their pink ball until the 16th hole when it was lost on the approach to the green. Captain Burns was sanctioned a pitcher of beer when he admitted that they indeed had lost the ball on # 16 but also admitted his squad, who had found Team Backie's ball that was lost on the first hole, used the Backie ball until 16 and then substituted their own ball at the end of the round to make it appear they had been successful in keeping "pinkie" for the whole round. Burns, the captain, who certainly should know better, promptly paid his sanction but upon further review the Commissioner has sanctioned Team Burns 3 more pitchers of beer for "bringing the PGA into dis-repute". The pitchers are payable at the 19th hole after the Fairview Mountain game during the upcoming PGA trip. To be fair the Commissioner will allow Team Burns to nominate a spokesman from within their group to explain their actions in an attempt to have the sanction reduced or removed. The spokesman will have exactly 30 seconds for the rebuttal.
Moving On Up
The fourth PGA event of the season will be contested on May 24th at the prestigious Westwood Plateau course in Coquitlam. As part of our deal as negociate by Larry Brown the PGA will receive:
1. Green fees
2. Practice balls
3. Power cart (2 sharing)
4 $30.00 lunch each
Tee times begin at 10 am. Watch to web-site for future information.
In the woods..........expected back on tour are Larry Brown and Charlie Phipps who have been working on their games in Mexico.......all 19 regulars are expected at Westwood..........Mike Maddison will round out the field.........the team game will be announced next week...........the mysterious Bob Garries made his PGA debut at Swan-e-set and gladly paid a sanction "for being mysterious" levied by the Commissioner.......the 20.00 winner Rod Matheson won was commandeered into the beer kitty as a sanction " for leaving prior to the last group finishing"...........in fact 85.00 was left over in the beer kitty due to the generous contributions of the winners who stayed and left early.......the $$$$ has been invested and will be used at the 19th hole at Fairview Mountain.........
..
Grouping Nazi Speaks Out!
Blair Murdoch, PGA gamesmeister, Director of Competition and self described "grouping Nazi", has issued a stern warning with consequences for any PGA regular or spare with the nerve to request preferential treatment in regard to tee times. While Herr Murdoch did accommodate spare Dave Rice who requested to play with Doug Quinn at Ledgeview to discuss legal matters the request was granted only because no one else wanted to play with Quinn. Fuhrer Murdoch has decided to retroactively sanction Mr. Rice one pitcher of beer (payable at the 19th hole at Swan-e-set) as a deterrent to others who wish to attempt to dictate their tee times. This is not to say that preferred tee times, in some cases, will not be accommodated but after a reviewing each case at least one jug of beer will be assessed. The Commissioner has reviewed the grouping Nazi proposal and it been written into the PGA charter
Oliver Trip
Please consider and respond to the Commissioner on Saturday your status for this year's trip to Oliver to play Fairview Mountain and Inkameep Desert Canyon. We need to know how many rooms we need and for how many nights. Saturday night's accommodation is included in your yearly fees but with so many retired members it is anticipated that some will be going early. Negotiations are ongoing but it is anticipated that the nightly room rate will be about 40.00 each (2 sharing).
Tweeter Cup
The Tweeter Cup, a year long competition for most birdies, announced by the Commissioner at the Meadow Gardens event has been reworked. The rules will remain the same - only true birdies will count but the Commissioner has announced there will be two divisions based on 2003 opening handicaps. The Tigra Division will be contested by all members with handicaps of 16 or lower and the Weirsy Division will be contested by those with opening day handicaps of 17 or greater.
Green Jacket Rules
This year the best 5 of 8 rounds of net scores will count in the race for the coveted Green Jacket, emblematic of the season's finest golfer. All members who do not play at least five rounds will have their scores pro-rated and vie for the not so coveted Chartreuse Jacke
Swan-e-set Promises "Gay" Old Time
The PGA tour heads back to Pitt Meadows this Saturday to play the Lee Trevino designed Resort course at Swan-E-Set Bay Golf Club. Swan-e-set, the usual first stop in May for the tour, is reported to be in good shape but a little soft due to all the spring rain this year. Play will be from the White tees that measure approximately 6,400 yards. Our tee times begin at 10 am. The game will be a variation of the team Pink ball game that has been renamed "Faggot". Please see "rules" for complete details. TO SPEED UP PLAY A TIME LIMIT OF 2 MINUTES WILL BE ENFORCED BY EACH CAPTAIN TO SEARCH FOR LOST "FAGGOT" BALLS.
Lips Outs.......missing on Saturday will be regulars Larry Brown, Charlie Phipps and Dick Bourbonais. Subbing for them will be former regulars Vern Porter, Dave Rice and Len Slade respectively.........welcome back..........it will be Dave and Len's second appearance this year while Vern will be making his 2003 debut.........we are hoping the mysterious Bob Garries will also be on hand to finally make his tour debut.......Dick Burns' Seycove golf team finished with a record of 2 and 2 and made the playoffs for the first time ever..........as published last week Dave Rice will be sanctioned a pitcher of beer at the 19th hole for his tee time request along with "Rocket" Rod Matheson who has requested the 10 am group so he can arrive in time for his mother's 80th birthday party.......
Foursomes for Saturday, May 10th @ Swan-E-Set.
Captains are in capitals and must collect $10 from each golfer and remit
same to Murdoch or Backie.

Sanctions
The Commissioner has levied the following sanctions to be paid at the 19th hole on Saturday:
Rod Matheson: Preferred tee time request for Swan-e-set - 1 pitcher of beer
Doug Player: Group jumping @ Ledgeview - 1 pitcher of beer
Dave Rice: Group manipulation @ Ledgeview - 1 pitcher of beer
Royalty Rises at Ledgeview
The only blue blood on tour, Bob "Duke" Molinski, tamed the slick Ledgeview greens to not only win the event but also finish 1st and 2nd (by virtue of a blind draw) in the Olympic putting and chipping game. Molinski shot a excellent net 66 (82) with 15 Olympic points to win the event and earn himself a new lower handicap of 14. The Augusta like greens while problematic for most of the players were also handled by Hugh Taylor whose net 67 (83) was good for second while the low gross score of the day belonged to Dick Burns who carved a 77 (net 68) to finish in the "show" position. Both Taylor and Burns posted their scores despite struggling on the 18th.
Molinski won the Olympic first place money with help of Blair Murdoch who pitched in with 11 points. Rod Matheson who managed 7 points picked the "Duke" in a blind draw to finish 2nd with 22 team points. While Taylor with 14 and the man from Coke, Mike Maddison chipping in with 7, finsihed third.

Swan-e-Set on the Horizon
The next PGA event will be held on Saturday May 10, at Swan-e-set in Pitt Meadows. Our tee times begin at 10 am and we will again be playing the Resort course. Play will be from the White tees (approx: 6,400 yards). The groups will be published on the web-site next week

Gamesmeister Blair Murdoch has dusted off his popular putting and chipping game, the Olympic, for this weeks event. Please see “rules” for full details. Play will be from the 6,131 yard Blue tees. The course plays longer than the card indicates and the small and undulating greens are fast and difficult to read. Next Up - Ledgeview
The second PGA event of the 2003 season will take place on Saturday April 26th at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford. This is a semi-private course so our tee times do not begin until 1 pm. Ledgeview is a tight, hilly course that plays longer than the 6,131 yards advertised. They have two signature par 3's on the back nine that feature carries over ravines. The 15th is the tougher of the two usually playing about 180 yards calling for a carry of 165 yards. The 17th is shorter, only 130 yards but the green is smaller and elevated. The 17th demands an accurately struck high short iron shot. The finishing 18th, a par 5 starts out slightly uphill and concludes with a green perched about 65 feet above the fairway making club selection difficult.
Ledgeview is located at 35997 McKee Road. Tel# 604- 859 - 8993. They take bookings for public play 3 days in advance for anyone thinking about a practice round. Directions to the course will be published on the web-site next week.
Bourbonais Wins Meadow Gardens Opener
Setting a precedent that would be followed a day later by a slightly more famous left hander, Dick Bourbonais got accustomed to the sloppy conditions at Meadows Gardens quickly and won the PGA 2003 opener. Dick managed his way around the wet and muddy Pitt Meadows track using timely putting to shoot a solid net 65 (78) despite hitting it in the water on 11 and 13. He offset those mistakes with birdies on 10 and the closing 18th. One shot back was the new Commissioner, Tom Carter, who slopped his way around to a net 66 (80). A number of players tied for third with net 68's.
Event One Scores: see scores page
Team Molinski Wins the St. Alice
The team comprised of Molinski, Brown, Maddison and Taylor won the team "St. Alice" competition shooting 9 under par. St. Alice was once again another fun format that Blair Murdoch came up with involving rotating captains and more importantly, astute decision making. Bob "Duke" Molinski the captain of the winning squad had the knack of making the right decision and the right time. Two teams tied for the runnerup spot. The team captained by the gamesmeister Murdoch with Charlie "Tuna" Phipps, Rocket Rod Matheson, and 2PR (Two Putt Ron) Stinson along with the group of the Commissioner, the winning Bourbonais and tour rookie, Doug "BeerHead" Player. Player won the KP contest on the par 3 152 yd 13th with a fine effort 4 feet from the pin and Len Slade, the former Commissioner, grabbed the long drive honour on 16 with a long, for the conditions, drive of over 250 yards.
In the woods.........the absent Doug Quinn who begged off on Friday morning citing work complications (stuck in Terrace) received a 50.00 fine from the Commissioner and as such the 50.00 coming to Mr. Quinn from spare Bob Carter was "donated" to the table on the 19th hole.......Paul "Killer" Killeen missed his first ever PGA event - he is vacationing and playing golf in Bend Oregon but the Asst. Commissioner will be back for the Ledgeview event........Dick Burns' 81 included a triple bogey on the 18th..........the Commissioner annouced that the Long Drive and KP's will be a year long competition.......also annouced was the prestigeous year long birdie competition, The Tweeter Cup..........the Tuna was dissappointed after shooting 79 and will miss the next two events.......thanks to all the spares who were able to play.........
The new PGA season tees off Sat. April 12th at Meadow Gardens, the traditional opening day venue, with 20 linksters starting the journey through spring that each hopes leads to the coveted green jacket given the years finest. Back to defend his title is Charlie "Tuna" Phipps who baffled the pundits by winning the green jacket in spite of his low handicap in his rookie campaign. At feat few felt possible but the "Tuna" succeeded shooting a wonderful 71 (gross) at Northlands in the 2002 Calcutta and season finale. Please make note of the group you are playing in and the time along with the game as created by none other than our own Gamemeister Blair Murdoch. Due to the wet weather play will be from the WHITE tees. Please arrive no later than 8:30 am so we can get organized.
Welcome back lads!
Foursomes for Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Meadow Gardens are as follows;
9:00 MURDOCH 18, Phipps 7, Matheson 16, Stinson 22 = 63
9:08 BACKIE 13, Gjernes 22, Burns 9, Garries 18 = 62
9:16 MOLINSKI 16, Brown 14, Maddison 17, Taylor 16 = 63
9:24 SLADE 16, Quinn 11, Lanyon 17, Overgaard 19 = 63
9:32 CARTER 14, Jeffries 13, Bourbonnais 13, Player 23 = 63
The capitalized golfer in each foursome is responsible for collecting
$10 from each golfer and giving it to Blair Murdoch. The capitalized
golfer is responsible for deciphering the rules of our side game, "St.
Alice", (See Rules page). We are relying heavily on the
capitalized guys to come through this Saturday. If any of them falter,
even once, they will be reduced to lower case for subsequent events and
will be stripped of their C's (for capitalized).
Pray for sunshine!

THE SEASON AHEAD
PGA Season number seven will have a different look and feel. Soon the web-site will be hosted elsewhere (new URL address) and administered by our new Director of Communications, Hugh "Dogballs" Taylor. At this time we would like to thank Bob Dunn for designing and hosting the web-site from its inception. Bob, who is sparing this year, did an incredible job. Other changes include some of the old regulars taking a year away or opting for spare status. Rookies abound with the aforementioned Taylor joining Ron Stinson, David Overgaard, Bob Garries and Doug Player as fresh meat for the tour carnivores. We hope to see some of the old regulars from time to time but 2003 will feature a smaller core group and new courses to play.
We have assembled arguably the finest rotation of venues ever for the 2003 season. We have achieved true diversity within our 8 venues from flat and playable (Meadow Gardens - Swan-e-set) to tight and hilly (Ledgview - Fairview Mountain) and have even included a dessert track (Inkameep Canyon) and topped it all off by securing times at one of the finest lower mainland courses, Westwood Plateau. The green jacket winner for 2003 will be someone who can manage his game, hit it straight, putt superbly and most importantly.... drink beer afterward.
Smooth Swinging,
Tom Carter - PGA Commissioner
Westwood Plateau Confirmed
Due to diligent work and negotiations performed by Larry "Ace" Brown it has been confirmed that the PGA will play at the world class Michael Hurzdan designed Coquitlam course on May 24th with 10 am tee times. Brown was successful in negotiating a round which includes -30.00 lunch per player after the round on their spacious outdoor deck, Practice balls, Full run of the clubhouse (showers etc)The Commissioner would like to publicly thank "Ace" for all his efforts in securing Westwood Plateau. A job well done!
Quinn Returns
Doug Quinn, who had originally thought his work schedule would reduce his tour status to that of a spare, has successfully fast tracked his lumber mill negotiations to the point where the former green jacket winner will return to the tour full time this season. "I've done a lot of work and we are close to a deal up there and once I saw the quality of courses on the schedule I decided I had to play" stated Quinn.
New Blood for 2003
Along with Daryl Gjernes, who is returning to The Tour after injury, four rookies have been accepted for play in the 2003 season. They are spares Hugh Taylor and David Overgaard, and relative unknowns Bob Garries and Ron Stinson. Garries’ name was forwarded by Larry Brown and Dick Burns and, after surviving the interview process, Mr. Garries was added to the 2003 roster. Stinson, a local putting legend, also survived the interview process. Taylor will take over the duties of departed Bob Dunn as the Director of Communications and will be responsible for our web-site.
Slade Sabbatical…Follows Gilchrist
Former Commissioner Len Slade will be a spare next year. It seems that he has a vacation booked in Palm Springs next spring that would not allow him to attend over half the events so he will either spare or split a spot with Vern Porter. Slade joins Bob Dunn, Cookie Gilchrist (whose retirement slipped by unnoticed) and John Baxter as regulars not returning to full-time play next season.
John Baxter Retires
With the recent "retirement" of long-time Communications Director Bob Dunn, another Tour regular has decided not to play next season. John Baxter, who played on tour for two years, won’t be back in 2003 and, like Dunn, John will be missed. The playing roster count is currently 22. Announcements on the remaining two coveted regular spots will be made soon.
- October 2002
Lip-Outs...
Former Green Jacket winner Doug Quinn has accepted a one-year term as a Vice President with the Terrace-based lumber outfit he has been working with…By the way, where is the Green Jacket?…Duke Molinski is reported to be currently working on his game in Tuscany and is due back after Christmas to prepare for the new season...Neither Jim Lanyon nor Dave Rice covered Duke’s $200 payment as requested by the world traveler, but Lanyon did remit on his own behalf...Should Len Slade and Vern Porter share a spot, stats man Dave Backie will come up with a method to combine their handicaps and scores...Northlands has decided not to accept group bookings next year so changes to the playing schedule will be made up.
Molinski In Training
The following cablegram was received by the PGA, from Bob Molinski, with the request that it be passed along to fellow Tour players:
“Currently travelling in France and will not be back until Jan. I know Lanyon or Rice will pay my dues as they come up — just tell them I am good for it. Also, you should know I am working on my game here in France — taking lessons from some alleged pro named Jean Van--- or something. He figures that with his work my game should be able to hold up for about 17 holes.”
The times as previously posted on the web-site were incorrect. Here are the official starting times:
Team Bourbonais - 11:35 am
Team Burns - 11:44
Team Carter - 11:53
Team Quinn - 12:02
Team Phipps - 12:11

Gamesmeister Blair Murdoch has dusted off his popular putting and chipping game, the Olympic, for this weeks event. Please see “rules” for full details. Play will be from the 6,131 yard Blue tees.

Foursomes for Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Meadow Gardens are as follows;
