Shakey Player in Driver's Seat for Green Jacket
Shooting a near impossible net 64 at Carnoustie Golf Club last Saturday has virtually insured Shakey Player will win the Green Jacket for the 2013 PGA season. With only the compulsory Calcutta round left at Pagoda Ridge next Saturday his total of 339 is 7 better than Docme Dick Burns (346). Two others with an outside shot are two former winners, TipTop Borland (351) and Mr. Bean Volpatti (352). Please see scores for details.
Someone will have to shoot an extremely good score or Shakey must collapse to change apparent history being made by the former Trial native and SBC. There have been very low net scores in the past. Knuckles Garries shot a 61 at Kelowna Springs a few years back only to be trumped by El Cid Murdoch's 60 in the group after. So some precedent exists. None of those scores were shot at the Calcutta however.
Carnoustie Shines
Our first visit to Carnoustie in PoCo was a resounding success. The weather co=operated and the course was in very good condition. Several members expressed their delight and it appears the tour will return next season.
Calcutta Teams and Times
The season ending Calcutta will be played Saturday June 22nd at Pagoda Ridge in Langley. Our tee times begin at 10 am so please arrive no later than 9:30 so we can get organised.
The Calcutta will follow our regular format. Each team buys itself for 200.00 (50.00 each). The scoring is 2 net scores on each hole with each team counting each player's score at least six times. Pagoda is in very good shape and we will play summer rules with the "PGA rule" being in effect (any shot OB, in water or lost will be played within two clubs lengths of the position the ball ran afol (Entered the hazard) ...one stroke penalty)
Captains are in bold and responsible for collecting their team's 200.00 entry fee and forwarding to the Commish.
10 am - Garries - Killeen - Brown - Slade 10:09 - Grundy - Taylor - Player - Ostereicher 10:18 - Backie - Walters - Volpatti - Cain 10:27 - Carter - Borland - White - Porter 10:36 - Burns - Alexander - Davidson - #20

slice it into the woods.....thanks again to Shakey and his wife Maureen for hosting the annual bbq after golf on Saturday....please read the email he sent everyone for your contribution to the dinner....former members Fonz (Len) Slade and TreeTop (Vern) Porter will play the Calcutta as Lefty Sherk and Mumbles Goulding are travelling....we hope to recruit one more spare to play in the Burns group.....the Commish will be away this week visiting his Yogi in an effort to find his swing....Killer Killeen reports the charity funds raised for the BC Kidney foundation (see charity page) are at 800.00, lets see if we can get it to at least 1,000!....see you at Pagoda on Saturday!!
Burns Leads Green Jacket Race
Going to second last PGA event Docme Dick Burns (346), fresh off leading the Dawgs to another Tripper Cup title, leads the race for the coveted Green Jacket and currently leads Bean Volpatti and Shaky Player (352) by 6 strokes. With Mumbles Goulding travelling to Africa those with a outside shot include Tip Top Borland (354) and Citizen Cain (355). Next week's Calcutta round is compulsory for each player so the fat lady hasn't sung yet but she's clearing her throat. Please see scores for details.
Carnoustie Poco not Scotland
This week’s PGA event will be played at Carnoustie Golf Club in Port Coquitlam. Our tee times begin at 11 am so please arrive at 10:30 so we can organise. Here is a link to the course: http://www.carnoustiegolf.ca/
WOLF
We will play WOLF. The Wolf rotates each hole. The rotation will be determined by tossing a tee at the first hole. Once everyone has played their tee shot the WOLF can decide to be a LONE WOLF or partner with another player against the two others. If the player goes the LONE WOLF route, the player must beat every other player in his foursome (net scores) to earn 5 points. If he selects a partner and they beat the other two both players earn 2 points. If the two non-chosen players win they earn 3 points. If the hole is tied each player earns 1 point.
KP will be on the 150 yard par 3 14th hole.
Groups and Captains (captains in bold and responsible for collecting 10.00 per team mate for 19th hole) 11 am - Player Borland Carter White 11:09 - Grundy Taylor Backie Cain 11:18 - Garries Burns Volpatti Ostereicher 11:27 - Killeen Davidson Alexander Brown
Annual PGA BBQ
The annual PGA BBQ will be hosted once again by Shaky Player at his palatial mansion in North Vancouver after the June 22nd Calcutta. We thank Shaky and Mrs. Shaky for their hospitality!! To that effect Shaky will have a "menu" he will pass out at the 19th hole so we have the correct amount of types of meat to bbq. There will be a few choices...steak, chicken and salmon most likely. Also Shaky will assign each member an appy, desert or salad to bring as per our usual plan. He will be asking for the menu selections back so please ask your significant other what she wants as a main course.
More bbq and Calcutta (Pagoda Ridge) news will follow next week.
hooking it OB.....former Commissioner Fonz Slade along with long time former member, TreeTop Porter will play in the Calcutta bringing our number to 19....we need one more so if anyone knows someone who wants to play (and bet...each team buys itself for 50.00 each) please let the Commish know....Lefty Sherk will miss the last two events while in Dublin, Ireland.....the Calcutta teams will be held via blind draw at the 19th hole.....
They Fought like Cats and Dawgs
This years Tripper Cup Matches went right to the wire with the Dawgs captained by Docme Dick Burns edging the Cats 23 - 22, the tightest match in PGA history. The Dawgs used the team matches on Saturday at VGC to take a 10 - 5 lead and then withstood a valiant effort by the Cats to hang on and win.
Lefty and Ex-Whizzer Lead Teams
The Dawgs win was mostly due to Lefty Sherk winning the 18th hole and his singles match 2.5 - .5 Lefty, with the help of captain Burns also hammered the Commish and Shakey Player in the team matches 3 - 0 to give Lefty a 2 day total of 5.5 points to lead the Dawgs. As good as Lefty was Ex-Whizzer Backie won both his matches to earn 6 points for the losing Cats side.
Next Up - Carnoustie Golf Club June 15th
The 7th and second last event of the season will be played at the Carnoustie Golf Club in Port Coquitlam with tee times starting at 11 am. Please arrive no later than 10:30 so we can organize. The foursomes and game will be posted online next week.
Green Jacket Race
The Carnoustie event will be the last chance for players to jockey for position in the Green Jacket Race before the Calcutta at Pagoda Ridge. The Calcutta counts for everyone in the race for the Green Jacket. While some who played well at the Tripper Cup such as Bean, Muscles White, Burns, and Tip Top Borland others need to play well in the last two events to have a shot.
Scores Please
The scoring sheet from Spallumcheen was lost. We have been able to get most of the scores from MyScoreCard but we are missing those who have not yet posted or don't use my scorecard. We need the following members to email their Spallumcheen scores only to: [email protected] Killer - Hoss - HappyFeet Flintstone - Lefty - DickO - Shakey Player - Stretch Everyone should check both days’ scores to make sure they are accurate before I update the stat sheets. Please send me your birdies as well. Hugh

The team match draw will be held on Friday night at the Tiki Village in Vernon.
The singles matches will be played at Spallmacheen on Sunday morning starting at 9 am. The singles draw will be held Saturday evening.
Saturday Dinner
Arrangements have been made for us to stay and have dinner at the Vernon Golf Club after Saturday's round.
Handicaps
Director of Statistics Stretch Grundy, who is playing for the Commissioner's Cats, will post the Tripper Cup handicaps later this week. In other news Dick Burns shot a cool 74 last week at Northlands.
Tripper Cup Predictions
Many throughout the golf world have chimed in regarding the outcome of this weekend's matches. Here are just a few of the predictions:
Tom Watson - Burns and I were born on the same day and we both think the Commish sucks farts so I'm predicting another easy Dawgs win.
Natalie Gulbis - sigh...that Knuckles guy with his athletic build and one handed (almost) grip is dreamy so I'll go with the Dawgs.
Tiger Woods - the team with the most blonds
Paula Creamer - I completely disagree with Nat, Dawgballs is most groovy so I'll go with the Commish's Cats.
Bubba Watson - uh? Anyone seen my hovercart???
in the rough....El Cid Murdoch will be our 20th at this weekend's Tripper Cup matches playing for perrenial winning Captain, Docme......Killer Killeen turns 69 during the trip....also congrats to El Cid Murdoch on reaching his milestone 70th birthday recently.....the Commish appointed BeerHead Player as his assistant Captain for the matches.....
Dave Feherty... He said one day, "It would be easier to pick a broken nose, than a winner in that group." "Fortunately, Rory is 22 years old so his right wrist should be the strongest muscle in his body." "That ball is so far left, Lassie couldn't find it if it was wrapped in bacon." "I am sorry Nick Faldo couldn't be here this week. He is attending the birth of his next wife." Jim Furyk's swing "looks like an octopus falling out of a tree." Describing VJ Singh's prodigious practice regime - "VJ hits more balls than Elton John's chin." "That's a great shot with that swing." "It's OK - the bunker stopped it." At Augusta 2011 - "It's just a glorious day. The only way to ruin a day like this would be to play golf on it." "That was a great shot - if they'd have put the pin there today." "Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff." "That green appears smaller than a Pygmie's nipple".
Mumbles Magnificent at The Falls
On a warm and muggy day at The Falls in Chilliwack, Mumbles firmly established himself as the favourite to win the coveted Green Jacket by shooting a splendid net 68 edging out Flintstone who managed his way around the difficult mountain side track with a net 70. The undulating greens together with the "valley" effect produced generally higher scores. The chipping and putting game was led by Mr. Bean's 15 followed by Beerhead (14) and Dawgballs (13). Dballs and Beerhead were drawn together in the blind draw and their combined score of 27 easily outdistanced everyone else. Citizen's shot to about 4 feet won the KP on # 14. Tripper Cup Matches - Vernon BC Our next event will be the annual trip featuring the two day Tripper Cup Matches to be played the weekend of June 1st and 2nd at Vernon Golf Club (1:30 pm Saturday) and Spallmacheen (9am Sunday). The teams, captained by Docme and the Commish, were formed via a blind draw held at the 19th hole at The Falls. Here are the teams:
Docme's Dawgs - Docme - Bean - Ace - Lefty - Mumbles - Tip Top - Killer - Flintstone - Bruno - Knuckles
The first day will feature 2 man net high low (the usual) matches and the second day will again be the singles matches. Points will be awarded both days as follows: 1 point for winning the front nine - one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match. There are 18 points available on the first day and 30 points available on the second day. The team who gathers 24.5 points will be declared the 2013 Tripper Cup Champions.
The captains will meet prior to leaving for Vernon for the team draw. The singles draw will be held at the 19th hole at the Vernon Golf Club. The first round team draw will be posted on the web-site next week along with predictions and in depth analysis of both teams. Tiki Village If you haven't already booked your room at the Tiki Village please do so right away.
Tiger Woods and.......Hoss returned to action after his heart procedure and managed a net 76.....DickO withdrew at the 11th hour due to work commitments so we only had 15 players....Mumbles team won the Pink ball game at Green Acres the week before.....
Mr. Bean Wins Battle at Green Acres
Mr. Bean turned in a sparkling net 68 to impose himself on the 2013 race for the Green Jacket. Perennial sandbagger BeerHead shot even par to remain in the conversation and lanky Mumbles shot himself a solid round to announce his green jacket aspirations. Once again Tip Top and Docme were the low gross leaders firing 78 and 77 respectively. Please check "scores" for details.
Next Up - The Falls
We continue the 2013 season with a trip out to Chilliwack to play the recently re-opened Falls this coming Saturday May 11th. The forecast for the area is sunny and 23. Now owned by the Aquillini family the mountain side east Chilliwack track is reputedly as good as ever. Remember everything breaks toward the valley! Our tee times begin at 10 am so please plan to arrive by 9:30 am so we can organize. And yes we get carts.
Chips and Putts
This week's game will be the blind draw 2 man chipping and putting game. It is a game that rewards holed putts and chips. Once everyone is on the green the player furthest from the hole will receive 4 points if he holes his putt . The next furthest is worth 3, then 2 and finally 1 point for a holed putt. If someone successful chips in they receive 5 points and the 3 remaining balls on the green are scored 3-2-1 if successfully holed. The winning team will be determined by a blind draw at the 19th hole. Typically a good two man score is 25 or better.

The first day team draw will also take place. We play the team matches at Vernon Golf Club on Saturday June 1st at 1:30 pm and the final day singles at Spallmacheen on Sunday June 2nd starting at 9 am.
In the rough.....superman Hoss returns to the tour just over a week after his recent heart procedure....TipTop will miss due to business and Knuckles is down with a bad back after posting 3 rounds in the 70's in Osoyoos last weekend....Ace Brown is also off for a visit to Penticton.....all will return for the Tripper Cup matches.......
Pinkie Comes to play at Green Acres
The Pretenders Golf Association's third event of the 2013 season at Green Acres this Saturday, May 4th, will feature our annual Pink ball game. The rules are simple. Each group receives a pink ball and establishes a rotation as to when each player plays the pink ball. The team scoring is the net score of the pink ball on each hole. If there is more than one team who manages to keep their pinkie throughout the full 18 hole round net scores will be used to break the tie. That being said its the winning team is usually the one that holds on to the pinkie the longest.
Our tee times start at 10:30 so please arrive at 10 am so we can organize.
Foursomes/Teams - Captains are in bold 10:30 - Backie 14 - Cain 16- Alexander 20- Grundy 17 10:39 - Goulding 18- White 36- Davidson 21- Burns 7 10:48 - Carter 11- Sherk 21- Borland 8 - spare 10:57 - Killeen 16- Walters 17- Taylor 14- Volpatti 20 11:06 - Brown 15- B. in the woods....Hoss Alexander returns to spark the first group out....kudos to Ace Brown for making the arrangements for us at Green Acres.....the course is shorter but very tight in places with small inverted greens and enough water, OB and crap to make the pink ball game interesting.....next week (May 11th) we play the recently re-opened Aquillini owned The Falls course in Chilliwack where we'll play the chipping and putting game.....finally Knuckles Garries will miss at Green Acres as he is illegally playing a non sanctioned event in Osoyoos, his sanction has yet to be determined.....
BeerHead Early Season GJ Leader
BeerHead Player shot a solid net 69 at Squamish in the PGA's second event to firmly establish his credentials in the race for the Green Jacket at the quarter pole of the season. Dick "I can't win because my 'cap is too low" Burns matched BeerHead with his own net 69. That works out to 77 gross, one better that TipTop Borland's 78.
The Captain's Choice game was well received. The Davidson group and Player group tied at 2 under. It seemed every team struggled with their hole by hole decisions. Please see "scores" for details.
Event # 3 - Pink Ball @ Green Acres
The third event of the season will be our annual Pink ball game which will be played at Green Acres in Richmond on Saturday May 4th. Teams/Foursomes will be posted next week.

Captain's Choice The team event with be the Captain's Choice game. Rules: before the round starts the teams must establish their Captain rotation as the Captain rotates on each hole. MumblyPegs Win Vienna Opener
Playing in surprisingly good conditions at Tswwassen Springs the 2013 PGA opener featured a run away win by the Team MumblyPegs who sandbagged their way to a 14 under score and lapped the field. Captain Mumbles soldiers included his cousin Ferdie (we thank Ferdie for coming out as a spare), BeerHead, and Citizen Cain.
The KP winner on hole #15 was a calculated guess as the course forgot to put out the KP marker. As best we could figure Dawgballs, Bean Volpatti and Citizen among others could have won. Docme Dick Burns was low gross posting a sparkling 5 over 75.
Low net honours went to BeerHead Player and Mr. Bean with net 67's. Please check "scores" for full details.
Squamish Valley April 20th - Captain's Choice
Our next event will be held at Squamish Valley Golf Club on Saturday April 20th with tee times starting at 11 am. The team game will be Captain's Choice, the rotating Captain game where the "hole" captain must choose a partner for each hole. The full rules and foursomes will be posted later this week.
In the woods......Whizzer Backie returned to the tour after injury and was his usual irrepresible self....the weatherman co-operated and arranged for the sun to appear by the third hole....we welcomed rookie DickO into the fold...he had enough sense not to shoot a good score his first time out....Mumbles couson Ferdie sent this message:

A little insperational humor Eight Iron Off the seventh tee, Joe sliced his shot deep into a wooded ravine. He took his eight iron and clambered down the embankment in search of his lost ball. After many long minutes of hacking at the underbrush, he spotted something glistening in the leaves. As he drew nearer, he discovered that it was an eight iron in the hands of a skeleton! Joe immediately called out to his friend, "Jack, I've got trouble down here!" "What's the matter?" Jack asked from the edge of the ravine. "Bring me my wedge," Joe shouted. "You can't get out of here with an eight iron.
The schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. "Is the word spelled p-u-t or p-u-t-t?'' she asked the instructor. "P-u-t-t is correct,'' he replied. "Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing."
An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse.
Fore! My five-year-old nephew wanted to caddy for my brother. "You have to count my strokes," my brother told him. "How much is six plus nine plus eight?" "Five," answered the nephew. "Okay," my brother said, "let's go."
Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right.. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.

If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble.
Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.

The term 'mulligan' is really a contraction of the phrase 'maul it again.'

A 'gimme' can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ... neither of whom can putt very well.

Golf's a hard game to figure.. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.

If your best shots are the practice swing and the 'gimme putt', you might wish to reconsider this game.

Scratch Golfer Two women were put together as partners in the club tournament and met on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, the first golfer asked, "What's your handicap?" "Oh, I'm a scratch golfer," the other replied. "Really!" exclaimed the first woman suitably impressed that she was paired up with her. Season Opener @ Tsawwassen Springs - April 6.2013
The season begins at Tsawwassen Springs on Saturday April 6th with 11 am tee times. The opener will feature the Vienna game. A foursome game as simple as a waltz....1,2,3....1,2.3..... Score the best net score the first hole, 2 best net scores the second and the 3 best net scores the third hole and repeat.
The Commissioner will set the season opening handicaps. If you have a REAL handicap please reply to the commissioner via email ([email protected]) to disclose your handicap and handicap source by Tuesday April 2nd. For those late in remitting their handicap or that don't have a 'cap, historical PGA data will be used to set your opening handicap.
It is expected that Whizzer Backie will return to his role as our Director of Statistics. We thank Stretch Grundy for doing a great job last year in Whizzer's absence.

The annual trip/Tripper Cup matches are set for Vernon the weekend of June 1 & 2 where we will play Vernon and Spallmacheen. Once again we'll stay at the Tiki Village. Details to follow. We expect, as in the past, that most members will drive up and play somewhere on Friday May 31st. We have scheduled the 1st round at Vernon late to give those driving up that morning time to relax after the drive. The Tripper Cup matches will follow the usual rules etc.
Spares who wish to make the trip and play in the 2 day Tripper Cup matches should let the commissioner know via return email by Friday April 19th. We will increase the field in blocks of 4 players as we need to extend the bookings by foursome. Currently El Cid Murdoch has indicated he would like to attend the trip and play in the matches.
Less than 3 weeks to the opener. Get out and practice!!
Last six inches down.....Killer Killeen has fled to Puerto Vallarta to tune up for the season....we welcome back into the fold Whizzer Backie who has recovered nicely from his knee replacement.....season opening "Vienna" teams will be posted Wed. April 3rd....
Tom Carter
Season Starts April 6th
While the "other" PGA members toil away in April at Augusta National at this year's Masters tournament the west coast PGA will begin its season at the new Tsawwassen Springs course located in Tsawwassen at the site of the old Tsawwassen course. Our tee times begin at 11 am. This is the Ron Toigo/Pat Quinn development that includes new homes and condos etc. The homes and condos are well back from the course and although short the course has received positive reviews.
Dues - $700.00
Usually we trumpet "Beware the Ides of March" as the date we need everyone's dues but this year we are asking everyone to have their dues delivered by Friday March 22nd. After years of keeping the dues at $650.00 the rising cost of golf dictates we must increase the yearly fee to $700.00. This included all 8 golf events and the year end bbq/awards dinner. Please mail your cheques made out to T.Carter/PGA at 103-7342 Winston Street, Burnaby BC V5A 2G9 to avoid being sanctioned.
Reduced Field
Due to injuries, the resulting surgeries and other commitments we find ourselves operating this year with only 16 regulars. They are:
Burns - Brown - Carter - Garries - Borland - Backie - Alexander - Player - Taylor - Walters - Sherk - White - Killeen - Grundy - Volpatti - Goulding/Odendaal.
Last year's rookie, Steve Cain will be our first spare. Other spares are Hamish Watt, Cam Watt, Bob Carter, Dick Wardroper, Blair Murdoch, Ted Budai. Allan Maynard and Peter Sidonio.
Injured Reserve
As we welcome back Whizzer Backie, out all last year with a knee replacement we say good luck and speedy recovery to Tiki Tibble (knee replacement) and CockNose Madsen(hip). Killer Killeen returned early last year showing old guys can recover quickly if they are killeen....er keen enough.
The second event of the season will be played at Squamish Valley Golf Club on Saturday April 20th. The full schedule with tee times etc will be posted soon. The trip this year is the Vernon where we will play Vernon Golf Club and Spallmacheen on the weekend of June 1st and 2nd.
Hope everyone survived winter well and made a trip south to prepare for the 2013 season.
