YEAR 2004
Ch-er's, Darling and Dogballs??
What do the above have in common? Each entity was a big weiner in the season ending PGA Calcutta played in wonderful conditions at the world renown Westwood Plateau golf course. The CH-er's fired a team 23 under par to capture the 7th annual Calcutta and were excellent value for the money. The team that paid the least (300.00) for itself won 1,065.00 to go home fatter in the wallet with happy, happy wives.
Dogballs Powerful
The CH-ers captained by "Massive-Bruise" Dick Bourbonais were led by Hugh "Dogballs" Taylor who fired a net 64 (tied with Jake for low net of the season) under sunny skies and warm temperatures. Mark "Hairlip" Darling one of four rookies this season played superbly on the back nine and spare Dave "Doc" Rice was steady with a net 74 to help the CH-er's cause.
The Bastards and DeadDicks tied for second place at 20 under while the Assholes at 18 under and Erotica at 17 under trailed the pack. Erotica was slowed by an injured knee suffered by their captain Doug Quinn while the Assholes were just that. The only other round in the 60's, a net 67, was turned in by Blair Murdoch.
"Hairlip" Looks Goods in Green
Rookie Mark "Hairlip" Darling Calcutta round of net 76 bumped a previous net 78 and give him a best five score of 355 to become only the second rookie (Tuna Phipps - 2000) to win the coveted green jacket emblematic of the PGA finest.
"Hairlip's" rounds of 72-69-67-71&76 (355) edged out Blair Murdoch and the Commissioner, Tom Carter who both managed 357. There was a three way tied for third place with Tuna Phipps, Dick Bourbonais and Dick Burns sharing the prize money. Darling, the Kenny Rogers look alike, was also a member of the winning Calcutta team. The 120.00 prize money to go along with the Green Jacket upped his nightly total to just over 385.00.
Season #8 - 2005
Next season will be our 8th and we expect some changes. Dick Bourbonais will not be available as a tour regular so we will need to replace him. If anyone wishes to forward a name(s) for consideration please do so. Next years Tripper Cup matches have already been arranged by the Tuna for May 27-29 at the Palmer Whistler course and Pemberton Golf Club. The Falls will fall off our course rotation list and we are hoping to have a second road trip to visit the aforementioned Bourbonais in Craig Harbour and play a 36 hole event in mid/late April at Storey Creek and Morningstar.
Commissioner Moonlights @ US Open
Commissioner Tom Carter moonlighting from the Pretenders Golf Tour made the cut and finished tied for 55th at the 104th U.S. Open played this past weekend at Shinnecock Hills in South Hampton New York. Like the rest of the field Carter had problems on the final day shooting 85 but his previous rounds of 74, 71, & 70 was enough to edge out former US Open winner Tom Kite among others. Mike Weir who finished 4th at 4 over was the low Canadian followed by newly minted Canuck, Stephen Ames who finished 9th at plus 7. Please go to www.usga.org for more US Open details.
500.00 Prize $$$ Up for Grabs
This Saturday not only will the much coveted Green Jacket be up for grabs and the Calcutta do-ray-me, the Tour office has crunched the numbers and the following prize money will be awarded to the top ten finishers in the Green Jacket race.
1st - 115.00 2nd - 75.00 3rd - 65.00 4th - 50.00 5th - 45.00 6th - 40.00 7th - 35.00 8th - 30.00 9th - 25.00 10th - 20.00
DEADDICKS Early Favorites
Local bookmakers and those in Las Vegas have established the DEADDICKS team as the early favorite to win Saturday's Calcutta at Westwood Plateau. The May/December squad is comprised of our two oldest and two youngest members. Murdoch (18) and Quinn (11) have the experience to guide the young pups, Jenkinson (18) and Stinson (30), to victory and a place in PGA history. The two youngsters are rolling having won the last two events. "Jake" won the Tripper Cup singles which included an excellent 64 at Sun Rivers and "2PR" Stinson won his first ever PGA event at The Falls in our last event with a solid 69.
The BASTARDS should be the team to push the DEADDICKS. Captained by Paul "Killer" Killeen and fueled by "Tuna" Phipps and the smooth swinging Dave "Iceman" Backie this team has the most talented group but must cajole 7 holes from the inconsistent but sneaky long Dave "Dro" Overgaard. If the hot and cold Overgaard (27) gets hot on the right holes the BASTARDS could well end up licking the DEADDICKS.
This year's dark horse team is surely the low rent (300.00) CH-ER'S. They will be emotionally charged by captain "Massive" Dick Bourbonais (12) who will be playing in his last PGA Calcutta as Tour regular and the talented big man will no doubt want to go out as a winner. He is joined by Hugh "Dog#%@*$" Taylor (17) and "Hairlip" Mark Mark Mark Darling (19) both of who has favorable 'caps for this type of Calcutta. If the improving Dave Alexander can be steadied and make a few pars the CH-ER"S could take home the biggest share of Calcutta $$$.
Team EROTICA is captained by multiple Calcutta winner "Duke" Molinski who will be ably assisted by "Ace" Brown who has also won. Bob "The Knob" Garries (23) and newcomer Barry Taylor (19) round out the squad. The pundits feel that this squad has too many medium range handicaps to really push to victory but could easily wind up "in the money".
The ASSHOLES are just that. Led by the always feuding "Docme" Dick Burns and the Commissioner the 'HOLES must hope that calm and serene rookie (Wee) Dick Wardroper (19) can provide parental type influence. Fourth member, the long hitting Ken Sherk (26) does always seem to play well when under the watchful eye of his swing guru Burns so there may be a small amount of hope for this sad sack squad.
The 19th hole.......please remember that range balls are provided at Westwood so arrive early if you wish to hit balls........lunch is also included so remember to tell your wives that the awards shindig at Killer's will start around 7......check the list for what you are to bring for dinner.....it should be a warm evening so bring with swim wear if you wish to take a dip.......remember to place your pari-mutual bets with Duke Molinski and bets are payable before the first ball is in place.....
Darling Forgotten But Tied for Green Jacket Lead
(Director of Communications apologizes to Calcutta team mate)
A computer (operator) error caused the exclusion of Mark Darling from the Green Jacket standings but the tour rookie sits tied with Commissioner Tom Carter atop the heap vying for the coveted prize awarded to the year's best, most consistent player. His 357 net total is comprised of rounds of 72, 69, 67, 71, & 78. The Kenny Rogers look alike is hoping to be the first ever rookie to capture the coveted garment.
Boubonais Bids Farewell
Long time PGA tour veteran & former Green Jacket winner, Dick Bourbonais, will be teeing it up for the last time as a tour regular at Westwood Plateau. Dick who recently retired is moving with his wife to a new home in Parksville on Vancouver Island where the lefty will have a bevy of excellent courses to choose from.
His solid play, sportsmanship and good humour will be sorely missed. We are hoping the biggest Dick will surface from time to time as a spare and each year for the Tripper Cup Matches, where thanks to his new address, he will be swinging for the World team. We wish him bon voyage and good luck!!
Stinson Gets Up @ The Falls
Ron "2PR-2puttRon" Stinson fired a net 69 which features many one putt greens to win the PGA's no. 7 event at The Falls. The newly minted 30 'cap took advantage of his putting prowess to capture his first ever PGA tour win. Charlie "Tuna" Phipps was the runner-up shooting the day's low score of 77 (net 71). Please see "scores" for all the details.
Larry Brown and Hugh Taylor won the Bingo, Bongo, Bango game with 18 points each.

BINGO, BANGO, BONG
As we approach the dog days of this golfing season it is time to dig out of the closet an old chestnut – "Bingo, Bango, Bongo".
Simple enough game, as follows;
World Party Wins 2nd Annual Tripper Cup Matches
World Party captained by Doug Quinn took the 2nd Annual Tripper Cup Matches in dominant fashion taking a 1 ½ point lead after the day one team matches. The team matches were transferred to the hilly and windy Eagle Point from The Dunes and World Party team members meshed well enough to sleep on the lead. "It is very important to lead after the first day" opined World Party captain Quinn at the 19th hole. "It's very hard to come back on day two so getting the lead was paramount".
Jake Bakes
The day two singles matches played at Sun Rivers were extremely hard fought but World Party stretched its lead hi-lighted by Mike "Jake" Jenkison's net 84 which included 4 tweeters. Needless to say Jake won the 36 hole weekend low net competition with a score of 136.
The final tally was:
World Party - 27 1/4 pts - Team North Van - 20.5 pts
Tuna Checking Into Whistler for 2005
Tuna Phipps, the weekend's low gross winner (160), is checking into Whistler for the 3rd annual Tripper Cup Matches. PGA officials are hoping that next year we will have a 3 day or 54 hole Tripper Cup played at the Palmer course @ Whistler, Pemberton and either Squamish or Big Sky depending upon our budget.
Anyone who owns or has reliable access to accommodations in Whistler and would like a few "guests" on the Tripper Cup weekend should let one of the members of the Tripper Cup committee know. Any $$$ we can save on accommodations means we may be able to play Big Sky instead of Squamish on day one (Friday) of the '05 matches.
Tripper Cup Committee:
Chairman - Tuna Phipps
Lackie - Paul Killeen
Lackie - Tom Carter
Lackie - Larry Brown
Event No. 7 - The Falls
The PGA Tour will return to the mountain side course in Chilliwack, The Falls on Saturday June 12th. Our first tee time is 10:30 am. Gamesmeister Blair Murdoch will post the foursomes and game on the web-site next week.
Ball flights........a hilarious time was had by all at The Keg during the annual Saturday night dinner........Captains Backie and Killeen may be second guessing themselves on the "trade" made during dinner.........each team has won the matches once setting up a grudge match in '05 at Whistler.......
Captain Quinn Recruits Quinn for TC2
Doug Quinn, the captain of World Party, didn't go far in his search to add the 12th and final member of his World Party team for the upcoming 2nd annual PGA Tripper Cup matches to be played May 29 & 30 in Kamloops.
From a list of candidates including Dick Zokol, Ray Stewart and Tom Rippon he chose is son Randy citing his 20 handicap as the biggest factor. "Sure the pros were tempting but it's tough to play against a 16 'cap and give them 18 shots" quipped Quinn. With the addition of the long hitting junior Quinn World Party members feel they are in better shape to compete with the vaunted Team North Van. Team North Van won the inaugural Tripper Cup matches in dominant fashion.
The Long & Short of It
In other Tripper Cup news Team North Van co-captains, Dave Backie and Paul Killeen, put forward a motion to have players on both teams be restricted to wearing long pants, much like our counterparts on the "other" PGA tour.
In a prepared statement co-authored by Backie and Killeen, the Team North Van brain trust, said "Team North Van feels when the PGA tour is playing out of the lower mainland we must adhere to the standards set by the other most famous tour and play in long trousers not short pants. When approached for their opinion of the long or short pant controversy un-named members of World Party confirmed that Team North Van should wear long pants to hide their "verycloseviens" from the on course beer girls, "especially Dick Burns" the un-named World Party member went on, "his legs look like OB stakes, Casper (Burns) will scare away any action from any very near sighted beer broads". The PGA Tour has not and is not expected to comment of the issue.
Squamish Provides Great Tune-up for the Tripper Cup
Squamish Golf Club provided an ideal tuneup for the PGA's upcoming 2nd annual Tripper Cup matches. The traditional parkland style course was made much trickier by the prevailing afternoon winds to mimic the conditions that will likely be found on day one of the Tripper Cup matches at The Dunes. Commissioner Tom Carter's net 69 won the event by a stroke over Paul Killeen and ____________. Please see "scores" for all the details.
Tripper Cup Day One Matches
The day one team matches for the 2nd annual Tripper Cup Matches were drawn at the 19th hole. Team North Van and World Party will be vying for the 18 points available for the day one team 4 ball matches that will by played starting at 1:50 pm at The Dunes on Saturday May 29th.
Match Team North Van World Party Time 1 Brown/Pomeroy Carter/Darling 1:50 2 Alexander/Killeen Quinn Sr./Stinson 2:00 3 Bourbonais/Wardroper Phipps/Murdoch 2:10 4 Overgaard/Garries H. Taylor/Rice 2:20 5 Molinski/Backie Jenkinson/Quinn Jr. 2:30 6 Sherk/Burns B. Taylor/Tibble 2:40 Tripper Cup - Day Two
Day two of the Tripper Cup matches will be played beginning at 9 am at Sun Rivers and will feature 12 singles matches and there will be 36 points available. Each match, team and singles, is scored 1 point for the front 9, 1 point for the back 9 and 1 point for the overall match. The winning team will need to collect 27.5 points to be declared the winner.
The singles matches will be drawn at dinner on Saturday evening after the day one team matches.
The Executive Inn
We will be staying at the Executive Inn on Victoria St. in downtown Kamloops on Saturday night. It is strongly advised that you check in before noon at the hotel prior to arriving at The Dunes on Saturday afternoon.
Here are the room assignments:
Brown/Tibble Quinn/Pomeroy Alexander/Darling
Killeen/Phipps Garries/Wardroper Sherk/Murdoch
H. Taylor/Carter Overgaard/Burns Stinson/Jenkison
R. Quinn
B.Taylor is staying with relatives as are Backie - Bourbonais - Rice and Molinski.
In the rough........Team North Van won the inaugural Tripper Cup Matches last year in Oliver (Inkameep and Fairview Mtn)........most members are leaving either Friday or Saturday morning with warm up rounds being played at Kamloops Golf club, Eagle Point and even Whistler.......
Tripper Cup Teams - Kamloops May 29/30
Both Team North Van and the World team for the upcoming Tripper Cup matches the last weekend of May will be announced at the 19th hole at Squamish. Team North Van won the inaugural matches last year in Oliver in decisive fashion. The Ryder Cup type matches feature team matches on day one at The Dunes and singles matches on day two and Sun Rivers. All matches are net score contests with 1 point for the front 9, one point for the back 9 and one point for the overall winner. With 54 total points available the winning team will need 27.5 points for a victory.
The co-captains for Team North Van will be Dave Backie and Paul Killeen who will be celebrating his 60th birthday during the Tripper Cup matches. The co-captains for the World team are Doug Quinn and Tom Carter.
We have an extra foursome of spares playing in the matches so each squad will have 12 members.
36 Hole Singles Event
Running concurrently with the Tripper Cup matches we will also have a 36 hole net stroke play event for Green Jacket purposes. The Green Jacket is awarded to the PGA member who has the best net average counting his best 5 rounds at the end of the season.

Quinn Edges Burns at Swan-e-set
Doug Quinn playing his finest round in recent memory shot an outstanding 75 (net 64) to edge Dick Burns who fired an equally impressive 75 (net 66) in the PGA’s third event played in warm and muggy conditions on the resort course at Swan-e-set. With Swan-e-set hosting a Canadian PGA event soon the course has let the rough grow making the two 75’s even more impressive. Quinn naturally won the Legion "hurdle" game with Burns the runner-up. Please see scores for full details.
Next Up - Squamish Valley May 15th
Our fourth event of the 2004 season will be played May 15th at Squamish Valley. Tee times have not been released by the club but we expect them to be somewhere between 10 and 11 am. The times will be posted on the web-site next week.
Special Guest at Squamish - John Mills
Gamesmeister Blair Murdoch will be in Europe and will miss the Squamish event but he has recruited none other than one of the PGA’s founders, John Mills to take his place. John, along with Phil Langley started the Pretenders some years ago and there has always been some controversy about who actually founded the group. Mr. Mills will speak to that subject at the 19th hole after the Squamish event.
Greens in regulation.........Barry Taylor joined the tour at Swanny under the guidance of Paul Killeen and has become our 20th full time member - he kept his nerve and played quite well despite some threats made by his playing partner after starting par - par - par ......Dave Rice made his season debut at Swanny subbing for Duke Molinski and was his usually upbeat, bubbly self.........the Commissioner’s office is "efforting" to get another foursome booked for the Kamloops Tripper Cup matches at the end of May......play at Squamish will be from the Blue tees and we will play the ball down........
PGA Set to Swim @ Swan-e-set
The PGA Tour is set for its third event of the 2004 season this time invading the Lee Trevino designed resort course at Swan-e-set in Pitt Meadows on Saturday May 1st. As has been our luck the last few years at Swanny the weatherman is calling for sunny skies with a high of 20. Both Bob Garries and the mysterious rookie Kensley Palmer will be making the 2004 debuts along with spares Dave Rice (Molinski) and Bob Carter (Overgaard) completing our competitor roster. Our first tee time is 10:30 and range balls are available.
PGA TOUR EVENT #3

"LEGION"
Overview: Legion is a creative handicapping method. Players receive a negative quota of points, called a "hurdle", based on their handicaps. The game is based on scratch players receiving a hurdle of 36 points, 1 handicaps receive a hurdle of 35 points, etc. All players start at 0 points for the day.

Quad = -2 points
Triple = -1 point
Double = 0 points
Bogeys = 1 point
Pars = 2 points
Birdies = 3 points
Eagles = 4 points
The player who clears his hurdle by the most points in his foursome wins $10. Additionally, the player who clears his hurdle by the most points in our entire 20 man field wins an additional $20. The second player in the 20 man field wins an additional $10.

Darling Leads Brown and Team to Victory
Rookie Mark Darling lead his team to a three shot win in the 2 ball Rookie game this past Saturday at Meadow Gardens. With Darling making brilliant decisions and led by Larry Brown’s net 65 (79) the squad cruised to victory on a soft and bumpy track. Hugh Taylor and Bob Molinski rounded out the winning team whose team net 130 easily outdistanced the 2nd place team lead by Dick Wardroper (Phipps, Quinn & Carter) who shot 133.
Brown edged out team mate Bob Molinski and Blair Murdoch to win the singles event. Please see scores for details.
Backie to Re-Set Handicaps
As is tradition after every second event Director of Statistics, Dave Backie, announced his intention to review and alter the Tour’s handicaps. As the veterans know recent tour play is factored heavily into Backie’s decisions. Speculation is among those looking at lower handicaps are the aforementioned Larry "Ace" Brown, Paul "Killer" Killeen, and rookie Mark Darling. Those who may receive higher ‘caps include Dick Burns, Jake Jenkinson and Ron Stinson while it appears that quite a few tour members are on the handicap bubble including "Duke" Molinski, Tuna Phipps and super spare Len Slade.
Next Up: Swan-e-set - May Day
The tour’s third event will be held on Saturday May 1st (May Day) at Swan-e-set Bay’s resort course. The Lee Trevino design features wide fairways, some water and generally fast putting surfaces. Once again many thanks to Dick Wardroper who used his connections (son is one of the pros) to get the tour a great deal on a very good course. Our first tee time is 10:30 and range balls are available as part of the package. The foursomes and game will be posted on the web-site next week.
Big Drives..........the 19th hole banter included speculation that GameMeister Murdoch will go with the Faggot game at Swanny renamed Bend for Svend........Mike "Jake" Jenkinson made his tour debut and his driving length immediately impressed the rank and file.....he was pin high on #18 in two........nice to see Daryl Gjernes back on tour subbing for Dave Overgaard.......Hugh Taylor was caught on camera stealing a very expensive driver from the pro shop but cited he was under extreme stress caused by the others in his winning group as an excuse.....the course has decided not to press charges........
GamesMeister Murdoch Tests Rookies Mettle
Blair Murdoch, the PGA Director of Competition, has devised a "rookie" 2 ball game that puts the onus of each of our 5 newcomers to produce or suffer the consequences for Saturday’s PGA event at Meadow Gardens. Murdoch will be making his 2004 season debut along with rookies Mike Jenkison and Kensley Palmer at the Les Furber designed Pitt Meadows track. While Kensley has a famous golf surname his prowess on the links has been a guarded secret. Mike or "Jake" will become Larry "Ace" Brown’s son in law in early July and early reports of his skill level smack of sandbaggage.
White Tees Gentlemen
Despite our nice weather of late, the course is playing to its usual spring conditions, soft. Play on Saturday will be from the White Tees as requested by the management to speed up play. The White Tees play 6,100 yards but under the conditions will play longer. KP will be on the 13th hole, a 150 yard Par 3 and the Long Drive will be contested on the 16th hole, a 410 yard Par 4.
Our first time is 9:20 so please arrive at 8:45 am so we can get organized.
Wardroper Sets Up Swanny for May 1
Rookie Dick Wardroper (Dick3), whose son is one of the pros at Swan-e-set, has arranged for the PGA to visit the Lee Trevino designed resort course for our third event on May 1st. Our tee times begin at 10:30 am. The event was originally scheduled for The Links @ Boundary Shores but a scheduling conflict dictated the change. Kudos to Dick3 for his timely contribution.
In the Rough........anyone notice that Brown and Jenkinson are not in the same group?.......Tuna Phipps and Killer Killeen are back on tour without missing an event after their Oregon golf training session over Easter.........Bob Garries will again be missing on Sat. citing work.......no fine is expected.......Garries is expected to debut May 1......subbing for Garries will be the former Commish Len "Fonz" Slade........
PGA TOUR EVENT #2
MEADOW GARDENS APRIL 17, 2004
"ROOKIE TWO-BALL"
Overview: This is a variation of the never popular game "St. Alice". It is a two ball "team" game where two balls count. Every foursome is saddled with one "rookie". For the record, the rookies are Palmer, Jenkinson, Darling, Wardroper and Alexander. The rookie’s ball must be counted on every hole. You will be required, as always, to post gross scores on your scorecards. Backie will sort the net scores out later.
Rules: 1. The "rook" (as they shall now be called) will establish a playing order from his foursome and write it down.
2. On hole #1, the "the rook" will assess all the tee shots, and prior to a second shot by anyone, he will choose one member as his partner on the hole. The "rook" writes the identity of his partner down on the scorecard by circling the square. The foursome is now stuck with the scores of that chosen member plus the "the rook" for this hole.
PLAYER GROUPINGS
Rookies are listed first and in bold letters. Rookies are responsible for collecting $10 from each member of the foursome and giving that prize money to either Murdoch or Backie after the round.
9:20 AM ALEXANDER, Backie, Overgaard, Slade
9:28 AM WARDROPER, Carter, Phipps, Quinn
9:36 AM JENKINSON, Bourbonais, Murdoch, Stinson
9:44 AM ?, Burns, Killeen, Sarkissian
9:52 AM DARLING, Brown, Molinski, Taylor
PGA 2004 Season Starts at Point Roberts
On a record setting day temperature wise the play on the Pretenders Golf Association tour was not quite as hot as the fast and tricky greens kept the field guessing even on the shortest of putts. The 8th ranked best new public course in the USA (Golf Digest) and the excellent day made the 2004 season's inaugural event a winner in any case. For the record Tom Carter won the event with a net 70 followed by Larry "Ace" Brown two shots back. This is the first event in recent memory that the winner has not been in the 60's, Please see "scores" for the field scores.
The popular Olympic putting game was won by the team of Dick Bourbonais and rookie Dick Wardroper. The two Dicks compiled 28 points to outdistance Taylor/Tibble (23) and Brown/Killeen (21) Backie/Sarossian (21). In all three PGA rookies made their tour debuts. Wardroper was part and the winning putting team and Mark Darling and Dave Alexander both put in good efforts on their debuts. We expect that the two remaining rookies, Mike "Jake" Jenkinson and Kensley Palmer will make their PGA debuts on April 17th at Meadow Gardens as well as veterans Blair Murdoch and Bob Garries.
Garries Sets Precedent
Bob Garries, the 2nd year tour regular who did not make the Pt. Roberts event, set precedent by fining himself 100.00 for his inability to find a spare and the lateness of his disclosure. Garries showed up at the office of Dick Burns on Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm, cap in hand, begging the Seycove principal for assistance in securing a spare. The self imposed fine was a shock to the Commissioner and the rest of the tour but the cash was accepted and will be put to good use during the season. Garries for his part should be commended for recognizing his error and inflicting such a generous wound thereby saving the Commissioner the trouble.
Next Up: Meadow Gardens
The tour's second stop will be at the traditional Pretender's venue of Meadow Gardens. The Les Furber designed layout has an excellent mix of holes and will be a good test. Our tee times begin at 9:20 am so please plan to arrive at 8:45 am . The groups and games will be posted on the web-site next week. For those of you interested please remember that the club house at Meadow Gardens features a very large hot tub that can be used by the public so bring your trunks and a unbreakable cup if you are so inclined.
Short Putts.......Charlie "Tuna" Phipps and Paul Killeen left immediately after the 19th hole for high country Oregon to work on their games over Easter......kudos for Paul and Judy Killeen for stepping up to host the annual bbq/awards dinner after the Westwood round on June 26th despite being into renovations, it is the 3 or 4th time the Killeens have generously hosted........the May 1 event at Squamish will see the tour welcoming a special spare for David Overgaard, none other that Dick Bourbonais' brother Dan.......and because of the circumstances the Commissioner has ruled that Dick & Dan will be teamed together for what ever game our gamesman Blair Murdoch puts together......this year's trip to Kamloops will once again be the battle ground for the Tripper Cup, the 2nd annual North Van vs The World match play event.....the inaugural event was won by the North Van team.......
2004 PGA Season Starts Saturday April 3!!!!
The wait is over. The 2004 PGA season debuts on Saturday at Points Roberts Golf Club in Point Roberts Washington. Please remember to bring ID including proof on citizenship to cross the border. Point Roberts was chosen last year by Golf Digest as the #8 new public golf course in the USA. If you have not played there the course features fast greens and excellent drainage. The weather looks like it will also co-operate as the forecast is for cloudy with sunny periods and only a chance of showers. Our 5 tee times begin at 10 am so please keep the border crossing time factor in mind.
The Game
The team game will be the popular Olympic putting game. 5 points for a chip in and then 4, 3,2,1 for the putts on the green. The winning 2 man team will have the most total points. If you require a spare please look on the roster under "spares". Here are the foursomes and teams as of Tuesday March 30th.

Calcutta at Westwood
Larry "Ace" Brown has been negotiating with his inside contacts at Westwood Plateau and it appears likely that the final event of the season, our annual Calcutta. will be played Sat. June 26th at the excellent mountain side course in Coquitlam. Last year we enjoyed everything except the weather but it is hoped that the late June date will bring sunny skies and warm temperatures. As yet no one has stepped forward with an offer to host the annual bb/awards dinner. Anyone who feels they might like to host should please contact the Commissioner.

"In the spirit of providing some much needed support to the less fortunate children of Canuck Place, we have decided to organize a fundraiser event called, The Winter Ale Open."
This year, Nevada Bob's Golf, along with Granville Island Brewing will be sponsoring the inaugural Winter Ale Open at Granville Island. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Canuck Place.
The Winter Ale Open will be an online golf tournament played on the "Golden Tee" video arcade game. The tournament will be a four round competition, with a winner declared after the final round. The contestant with the lowest cumulative score after the final round will be declared the winner. There will also be prizes for the contestants with the lowest score for each individual round.
We will be conducting a reverse raffle draw, which will run simultaneously with the golf tournament.
Major sponsors for the "OPEN" this year are Nevada Bob's Golf, Granville Island Brewing, Clodhoppers, Cactus Club restaurants, and GAMEDAY Auctions. The Tournament committee is seeking additional support to help make our event a success in support of Canuck Place. We would appreciate any prize donation that you may be willing to provide to help in our endeavour. Any contribution that you or your company can make would go a long way to help our event become a success. We are able to issue a donation receipt, through Canuck Place for income tax purposes.
If you are interested in getting in on the action to become the Winter Ale Champion, a $100.00 entry fee gets you in the game. This fee includes four rounds of "GOLDEN TEE" golf, dinner, tournament snacks, a bottomless mug of
Winter Ale and a ticket entry for the reverse draw. Additional tickets for the reverse draw will be available at a cost of $25.00.
Deadline for entry: January 31, 2004.
Thank you for your interest and support. I look forward to your show of support to make our event a success for Canuck Place. I can be reached at 604-785-5101 or via E-mail: [email protected].
Sincerely,
Mike Jenkinson

Stinson Returns to Make 20!!
The PGA Tour released today that Ron Stinson will again play on tour this season as a regular. Ron will be our 20th regular. Stinson, a 2nd year player, is looking forward to putting some new technology into play this year and is especially looking forward to the trip to Kamloops. "The courses in Kamloops are excellent" opined Ron at a recent Vancouver Police Dept. function. "The Dunes is one of my all time favorites, I’m happy we’re going up there this year". The annual trip which once again will feature The Tripper Cup Matches (North Van vs. The World) will be the weekend of May 28-30.
Searching for Gjernes, Matheson et al
We have now met our goal of at least 20 full time regulars on Tour but we have room for more players. We have not heard yet from Tour regulars Daryl Gjernes or Rod Matheson. As well former PGA players Dave Pearce, Vern Porter and Mike Maddison have not been heard from. We can operate with as many as 24 regulars so if you wish to play either as a spare or a full time player please contact the Commissioner at [email protected]. The tour will feature 4 rookies this year, Mike Jenkinson, Mark Darling, Dick Wardroper and Kensley Palmer.

The next person to enter as a regular will be our 20th so please do so quickly to avoid disappointment. Short Putts..........no ex-PGA member has entered the Re-Union event to be played May 15th, ex-PGA members have until Feb. 1st to enter so we can secure the required number of additional tee times..........members Burns, Brown and Carter played at Pt. Roberts last Sunday and reported back that all things considered the course was in very good shape........Pt. Roberts will host the PGA opening event on April 3 and was voted by Golf Digest as the 8th best new "affordable" public course in the USA for 2003..........
Big Lefty Back In for 2004
The big left hander, Dick Bourbonais has announced that he WILL be playing the PGA Tour this season as a regular. His new home in Parksville will not be ready until August 1 so the Southside will compete as a regular this season, and as usual, will be one of the contenders for the coveted Green Jacket.
PGA Re-Union - All Ex-PGA Members Invited Back - Enter by Feb. 1st
Dave Backie, our Director of Stats, has proposed that one of the May events be designated for PGA Re-Union event depending upon the interest from the ex-PGA members. We are hoping that as many ex-PGAer's as possible can find the time to come and play at the event scheduled for May 15th (tentatively) at UBC. In order to book the required tee times we need a commitment from any ex-member who wishes to play. Please contact either Tom Carter at [email protected] or Dave Backie at [email protected] by February 1 if you wish to play in the PGA Re-Union event. Any PGA member current or from the past please get the word out to all ex-members. (Regular tour members do not need to enter)
Brown Brings In Son-In-Law
Mike Jenkinson, Larry Brown's future son-in-law, has applied for and been accepted as a full time PGA member. Mike has a very good all round game and early indications are he will also contend for the Green Jacket. Mike joins the previously announced Kensley Palmer and Dick Wardroper as '04 rookies.

Please Enter for the 2004 Season by Jan. 15th
We require 20 regular members to have our Tour work efficiently (pre-booking tee times etc) so please commit by JANUARY 15 if you wish to play either as a regular or spare this season. This year's fees will be 650.00 and will include 8 rounds of golf, 1 night's stay in Kamloops, prizes and our annual Awards Dinner. If you know of any golfer who may be PGA material please have them contact the Commissioner at his e-mail address. The fee payment schedule as not yet been determined.
On the green........Dave Rice, Len Slade and Bob Carter have committed as spares for the 2004 season........Len may play full time depending upon his vacation schedule.........we will be looking for a volunteer to host the annual awards BBQ dinner so anyone who wishes to host should contact the Commissioner, the awards dinner will be held June 26th after our last event, the annual Calcutta.......
Calcutta Coming
The season's final event, our annual Calcutta, will be played at the prestigious Westwood Plateau course on Saturday June 26th followed by our annual awards dinner hosted (again) by Paul "Killer" Killeen. Our first tee time is set for 9:30 am. Thanks to Ace Brown range balls and lunch is included in our deal with Westwood. The Calcutta teams were selected via a four pot lottery based on average net scores prior to the Falls event. Here are the teams and Calcutta owners as drawn and auctioned at the 19th hole:
Assholes - Carter (10) Burns (10) Wardroper (19) Sherk (26) Owner: Sherk/Assholes - Cost: 540.00 TEE TIME: 9:30 am

Pari-mutual Betting
Bob "Duke" Molinski, our Director of Wagering, would like to remind everyone they can bet on any team to win, place, and or show. The minimum bet is 2.00. You can e-mail your bet to Duke at [email protected] or you can bet on the morning of the Calcutta prior to the first group teeing off. BINGO, BANGO, BONG
As we approach the dog days of this golfing season it is time to dig out of the closet an old chestnut – "Bingo, Bango, Bongo".
Simple enough game, as follows;
- Played amongst a foursome or (thanks to the three mokes who don’t show up) a threesome.
- Playing a normal game where the furthest person from the hole shoots first, the first person to land on the green scores BINGO.
- Next, when all four are on the green, the person judged closest to the pin scores BANGO.
- Then, putting in a normal rotation, the first person to sink his putt scores BONGO.
- Each of these milestones (Bingo, Bango, Bongo) scores 1 point each.
- In the unlikely event that someone gets all three of these on one hole they earn 3 bonus points, if in a threesome, and 5 bonus points if in a foursome.
- Highest total in the threesome or foursome gets his $10 back.
- Highest total of the day gets a $20 bonus, second highest a $10 bonus and third highest a $5 bonus.
- Try not to screw this up.

Second hole count the best two scores and circle them.

As always, record gross scores only (you can figure out what the nets are but don’t record them).

SWAN-E-SET MAY 1, 2004
Then, based on their performances, players receive points as follows:
Quad = -2 points
Triple = -1 point
Double = 0 points
Bogeys = 1 point
Pars = 2 points
Birdies = 3 points
Eagles = 4 points

- On hole #2, the "rook" again chooses one member of the foursome as his partner for this hole and records the identity on the scorecard. Again, the foursome score is based on the performance of the "rook" and the chosen golfer. Remember, the "rook" chooses the golfer after the drives but before any other shots are taken.
- All holes are played in a similar fashion to this.
- Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It is actually an IQ test for the "rook"!!! The trick here is the "rook" must use everybody’s score six times and six times only.
- In the likely event that a "rook" will screw up this relatively simple little game he will be sanctioned two pitchers of beer – one for his now screwed foursome and one for the rest of us who will be inevitably disadvantaged by the turn of events.
10 am - Spare (Murdoch)/Backie - Burns/Sherk
10:10 Brown/Garries - Bourbonais/Wardroper

Fee Payments
Please remember to get your first 300.00 portion of the yearly fee into the PGA office by Feb. 15th so we can start booking all the venues.
