2015 PGA Season
Borland Bags Green Jacket
The inevitability was confirmed at the season finale Calcutta, held once again at Northlands. The always dapper ZZ Borland displayed not only his haberdashery acumen but also his golfing superiority over all the other wannabees on the 2015 PGA tour. They didn’t look as good or play as well as the Top. Borland lead the season long race for the coveted Green Jacket from beginning to end and truly deserved the honour of putting his name alongside all the esteemed, past winners of that green jacket. Fred “Flintstone” Walters remained in contention until the final ball dropped but Borland’s steady play was too much for even the rising Flintstone to overcome. Flintstone won the first ever Runner Up Cup which he promised will be prominently displayed on his mantle at home. Third place went to the Silent But Violent Steve “Raising” Cain. Both Walters and Cain tried to apply pressure to Borland but his lead proved too big to overcome. Cain has also promised to put his 2nd Runner Up trophy on prominent display in his home. Those awards will undoubtably prove to be great sources of pride for the three winners for the next year to come. Congratulations, gentlemen, you proved to be the best golfers on tour over our 9 match season and truly, you three were the most steady among us. I expect all our other members will be honing their games over the off season so that they can vie for those highly prestigious awards next year, our 23rd season. Calcutta Winners Some outstanding individual play combined with the correct team timing produced the big monetary winners at our final event of the season. Out of a lost season, Ken TB Sherk finally showed up when big money was on the line and produced a net 64 to lead his dark horse team of Cain, Mason, Player and Sherk (now that’s the name of a shady law firm!) to victory on a hot final day of the season with a Calcutta total of -27. However, the final results are still pending drug testing for Sherk who has played in all events this season but this is the first time his golf game came with him. There is something strange about those results and we thought the honest Mike “The Stone” Mason would be able to keep this group in line. I guess too much to expect from a rookie. Second place went to the long shot team of no longer losers, Lyon, JR Leigh, Ostereicher and Burns who closed strong and finished at -25. Led by Burns’ best round of the year at net 65 and by JR’s booming driver, this team of former losers ham and egged their way to second place. A highlight of the round was Junior’s tee shot landing 4 feet from the hole on #10 followed by the sound of his putt dropping into the cup. The feat was almost as amazing as Sherk’s birdie on a hole where he got 2 strokes! Third place went to the ever present group of Walters, White, Killeen and Madsen who were pulled into the prize money with a net -21 led by Kim Kirknose Madsen’s amazing net 64 off his 8 handicap and the ever steady play of Flintstone Walters. Killeen did his best to drag his group down with three 8”s on the back 9 and almost leaving an 18 inch putt short on #16 when the last ounce of gravity allowed his putt to drop. That putt could have been the turning point for the group. Murray “Not So” White was just, well, Murray, shooting a cool net 76 off his 111. Next year Murray plans to set a new PGA record by not showing up to any events thus eclipsing this year’s record of only making it half the time. If Murray can set that record, the good news will be he will still be in the hunt for the Coveted Green Jacket right up until the final event. The bad news is that even though the upcoming year is a leap year, there still won’t be enough days of practice for Murray to get that handicap down. Watch out though, Not So White, there is a new player in town chasing you, The Stone Mason! Final Thank You’s First and foremost, a huge thank you to Doug Player and his extended family for hosting the yearend BBQ. Without doubt, this year’s event was the best ever. The setting was magnificent, the food was fabulous, the hosts and hostesses were gracious and oh so generous, the outstanding entertainment was an added, unexpected, and totally excellent bonus and the weather was perfect. The whole evening was completely memorable. I take back all those bad things I ever said about Shakey. Thank you Doug and Maureen, Alene and Hugh! Next a big thank you to the executive of the PGA and to the rest who have put in so much effort to keep the group together, have some fun and play a little golf. Paul, who is in charge of organizing venues and finances - the course we played have been great and the books have been honest and open; everyone can see where his money has gone. Paul has also done a great job taking photos that can be added to the website. Bob and Larry, who have been in charge of prizes did an excellent job of mixing up the prize bag and giving everybody a chance to get something back. Dale, who is our tournament director, was in charge of making sure everyone knew what they were doing and keeping the groups organized at the courses on the days of the event. Most of you don’t recognize what a pain that is with this group of reprobates when you are also trying to get ready to play. Vic is our Stats guru who keeps everybody honest with their handicaps and tracks the results of all the events. And he has to be extremely diligent because many in the group know exactly where they stand and don’t hesitate to keep Vic on track. Another big thanks to Steve for the hours he spends on the website keeping that going and maintaining a communications link and a history of this group. And to Alex and Bruce who are in charge of selecting the groups and picking the game every week. Gentlemen, we all owe you a big thank you for all your efforts in keeping this group alive and making it fun for everyone! The informal feedback I have received has all been positive. The season has been one of the best ever (having good weather helps enormously). I hope to see everyone back next year because it is an excellent group of guys; but remember, Player is on the wait list itching for an opportunity to get back in and he made a very strong pitch to have someone kicked out so he could jump back in by hosting the yearend event even though he was not even a current member of the PGA. If any of you have other friends who you think might be good additions to the group, let them know about us and show them the website. There always is some turnover for the group and we could always use more names on our spares list. Good health to everyone! See you next year. Gentlemen,
Since I had to race away from last weekend’s event, we didn’t get the Calcutta groups established. Traditionally, the groups were created by grouping players together according to their abilities then randomly selecting players from each category to establish the groups. This time what I did was rank order all players according to their average net scores relative to their standings in the Race to the Green Jacket using all rounds we have played. That is, the golfers who have the lowest net average to the golfers with the highest net average. I then created 4 groups: a top flight, 2nd flight, 3rd flight and a 4th flight from those rankings. From each flight I randomly drew names from a hat to create our five groups for the weekend. Each group will have one player from each of the flights. NOTE: The first tee time on Saturday at Northlands is 10:30. So as usual, everyone needs to be at the course by 10 am so that if there are any changes to be made, we have time to make them. Also, Paul is working on getting a range token for everyone at Takaya so if you want a warm up bucket, get there early enough to hit and get to the course by 10. The Calcutta Here are the rules and requirements for the Calcutta. Each player contributes $50 to the pot creating a total pot of $1000. The winning team receives $480, the second place team receives $320 and the third place team receives $200. Or if we have other suggestions about dividing the money, let’s present them now. It could be $100 to the winning team only. The game is that the two low net scores are counted on every hole and each player’s score must count at least 6 times. The Teams Team 1 (Be wary of the accounting in this group - the favorites at 2:1) Vic Grundy Bruce Davidson Alex Volpatti Dave Alexander Team 2 (Mason keeps this team honest - their guile makes this team a sneaky dark horse - watch out at 4:1) Steve Cain Mike Mason Doug Player Ken Sherk Team 3 ( A lot going on with this team but LB will keep them honest. Should be strong contenders at 3:1) Dale Borland Digby Leigh Blair Murdoch Larry Brown Team 4 (Which Murray will show up and will Killeen be back to full heath. Loaded with latent talent. Could be a wild card at 4:1) Fred Walters Murray White Kim Madsen Paul Killeen Team 5 (No hope for this group of losers but we know Jr will be long off the tee. A very long shot at 50:1) Drew Lyon Digby Jr Richard Ostereicher Dick Burns |

Prickly Pines Prevail
The highly favoured Weeping Willows jumped to a sizeable lead after day one at the Talking Rock Course at Quaaout Resort on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake. Down 9.5 to 5.5 after the first round, the Prickly Pine crew sat quietly at the side while the Weeping ones basked in their early Day1 lead. Even El Cid Murdoch was quiet. He was so morose after his first round, he didn't even finish a glass of wine and went off to bed without urinating on anyone or anything. Murray “I’m So Bad” White did not utter a peep of “In Your Face.” The weeping ones were even somewhat humble in their overconfidence after the first round. Perhaps they were still enjoying the leftover money that was spent in the bar the previous night.
However, the Prickly Ones showed their spikes on Sunday morning and led by the clean sweeps of Digby Jr over over Senior and the stats meister Grundy over “Knuckles” Garries who was obviously distracted by the loss of his cell phone the day before, the Pines raced back from a big deficit to win the Tripper Cup 23.5 points to 21.5 points. In the end, there was not much to choose between the two teams. The beer after tasted mighty fine! On a stellar weekend for golf even some of the golf was stellar.
The Resort
The somewhat home track for TB Sherk turned out to be an excellent venue for the Tripper Cup. Hearing no complaints and nothing but compliments around the table after Sunday’s round, the PGA will certainly have to consider a return to this venue. However, there still is the potential for traffic issues on the return trip home - about 5.5 hours for this foursome because of the volume at Abbotsford. The weather at Quaaout Resort certainly didn't hurt everyone’s opinion and the golf course itself was excellent. Perhaps next time TB can get his party boat undocked for everyone who can stay awake past 9.
The crew may try to organize a prescouting trip later this year to see if we can find other suitable possibilities for the Cup.
Green Jacket
A surprising, quiet new leader has emerged from the group after 6 rounds of play. (Although, there is some discussion needed to decide whether the Tripper Cup match play rounds should be included in the Race For The Coveted Green Jacket.) Richard “Head in the Sand” Ostereicher has quietly moved ahead of the immaculately attired ZZ Borland with steady Freddy Walters slipping to third after a weak for him weekend. However, there is still lots of room for movement as the tour moves into its final two events at Swan-e-set and at Northlands. No names can be embroidered into that jacket just yet!

Gentlemen
Here are you two teams for the our annual Tripper Cup road trip this year held at Talking Rock near Chase. The teams were selected by a non random draw trying to keep the handicaps somewhat even. In years past the teams were traditionally The North Shore vs The World but because The North Shore regularly thumped the world, we have had trouble recruiting from off the North Shore thus making that matchup impossible the past couple of years. Now we have a non random draw (who can figure out the method?) for teams.
Since we are playing on traditional lands for the Cup, here are the two teams with their traditional First Nations names given to them by their mothers after the first thing she saw upon their births.
Team Weeping Willows
Team Prickly Pines
Team captains are the first names in each group i.e. Borland and Madsen. They may chose whomever they desire to be their assistants
Tripper Cup Rules
Two teams are created using some method.
Day One is team format best ball foursomes with 2 pts available on each hole. Best
ball vs best ball and 2nd best vs 2nd best. 1 point awarded for winning front 9, 1
point awarded for the back and one for the match. Thus 3 points for each foursome.
Day Two is individual match play with same format: 1 pt for front, 1 for back and 1
for match thus 6 points are available in each foursome.
Foursomes are determined by the captains prior to play - Day 1 - blind pairings but
teams pre-determined by each captain. After play on Day 1, captains alternate putting out individuals to play. Leading Captain puts out first player then other captain responds with two choices in a row. Process keeps alternating until all are in.
*Remember, since all rounds count towards the Coveted Green Jacket, it is very important for every individual to play out each hole and keep individual scores regardless of whether the hole has been won or not. No gimmes outside of 1 foot.
At the end of the second day the losing team picks up the final bill at the awards table.
The weather promises to be hot and sunny on the weekend so bring your sunscreen. See you all at Talking Rock. Go Prickly Pines!

Cain Is Sweet Sugar At Northlands
On a tract that was running hard and dry, Steve “Raising” Cain cleaned up at the prize table this past Saturday. Not only did he win KP’s at holes #10 (second shot into the par four) and #16, he was also low net for the day and runner up at the day’s game, Chicago. He won so many prizes he didn’t have room in his car and turned a couple back into the prize bag showing that not only is he a very good webmeister, he is a quality gentleman. The rest of us take note!
In Close
The KP’s on the day were all brilliant shots. Each of the three was inside 4 feet on greens that were hard and tough to hold. Congratulations to Tommy Bahamas Sherk on hole #3 and the aforementioned Raising Cain on your displays of golfing acumen.
Also, the noted and highly esteemed Tommy Bahamas showed his true golfing, gentlemanly nature by returning a prize from a previous trip to the prize bag when he discovered his net score was incorrectly reported. Obviously something was in the beer at Northlands to bring out this highly ethical behaviour among our members. Thank you for setting such high standards of conduct, gentlemen. Or perhaps it is just a rouse to avoid future sanctions. I prefer the former.
Chicago Fire
The day’s game seemed to baffle some, especially the team captains who had trouble handling the record keeping but it didn’t baffle Freddy Flinstone Walters, Kim “Kirknose” Madsen, Raising Cain or the acting loudmouth at the table, Dick “Your Highness” Burns who were the only ones to mange numbers that were not negative on the day. Burns’ +3 lead the way, closely followed by Cain’s +2 and Madsen and Walters were back to ground level at 0.
Daily Sanctions
The big news of the day was that Flintstone escaped the week with no sanctions although after having his name drawn from the hat to receive the room upgrade at Talking Rock, there were rumours that he would be forced to share it with the Commissioner. Now that’s worse than a sanction.
However, the day did not go without its sanctions as three of the five captains failed to record the number of three putts in each group thus nullifying a trip to the prize bag for a couple of pathetic putters - Stretch Grundy and Mike “Steel Hands” Mason. Neglect of their responsibilities is not surprising from Spaceman Alexander but from Shyster Leigh and Raising Cain a neglect of responsibilities is a shock. Being in the same category as The Spaceman should be sanction enough but the extra $20 at the table was still necessary. Alexander will receive an extra sanction next week for his failure to produce his sanction money this past week.
Also imposed with a sanction for the week was Drew “I’m” Lyon for his lack of commitment to the tour. His failure to show up and instead demonstrate his lustful greed for business by taking clients out on another golf date shows where his true values lie. He can avoid next week’s sanction by taking all PGA members on a client related outing.

Madsen Sizzles On Sunny Saturday
Kim Madsen was as hot as the day this past Saturday at the Canal Course at Northview. His spectacular round of GROSS 71 not only tied the lowest gross ever in a PGA event, but his 6 birdies on the day was a record that may never be broken by any tour member. His net 63, however, was matched by two another magnificent net 63’s from Ken “Tommy Bahamas” Sherk and Richard “Steath” Ostereicher who quietly sneaked away without anyone noticing. Most of us strut when we have a round like that but not Stealth; he just quietly disappears. We won’t mention what his gross score was or what TB’s gross score was but the net 63’s not only tied for the best round of the day but they have been the lowest nets of the year so far. Well done, gentlemen!
In the other matches of golfing skill, the KP’s for the weekend were won by Fred Walters, Kim Madsen and rookie Graham DaLeat Leigh all with outstanding shots into 3 of the 4 par 3’s on the course.
Despite only a handful of manly wolf howls ( but there were several very meek and feminine yelps including a mild meow from El Cid, ) there were several in the running for the day’s Wolf Winners. Kim “I wore out a path to the prize bag” Madsen, Ken “TB” Sherk and the aptly named roarer Drew Lyon were the wolf winners, each with 14 wolf points.
The other big winner for the day was Vic “Stretch” Grundy who spent most of his afternoon in the sand and liked it so much he tried to bury his sand wedge in one of those bunkers with a mighty club toss that was neither a helicopter toss nor a hatchet throw but something in between both. Grundy obviously needs a little more practice with his tossing technique. Course officials are still trying to locate his club but in the meantime, Stretch will enjoy his bottle of wine.
Sanctions
PGA membership seems anxious to impose sanctions on each other but the committee is trying to show some decorum and appropriate restraint by not imposing superfluous sanctions. However, some issues are so egregious they cannot be overlooked. Being late for one’s appointed tee time is one of those events. One can partly understand Dave “Spaceman” Alexander’s tardiness. After all, he spends his waking hours in mental orbit. But to allow himself to be caught up in the “Spaceman’s” world and be late for a tee time is shameful for our webmeister Steve “Raising” Cain. Steve, you need to learn to keep better company.
Another of those inexcusable events is not keeping a current handicap and our membership thanks those tardy, inaccurate handicap keepers for their contributions to the beer pot. This sanction was lead by our current sanction leader, “Flintstone” Walters who failed to post his winning low net from the previous PGA event. The rest of the failure to posters were so poor their handicaps could not possibly go down - right, Murray? Let that serve as a warning to the rest of us. Our Statsmeister has his beady eyes pealed.
As for the rest of you, shame on your pitiful attempts to search high and low for ways to sanction the just deliverer of those sanctions. Remember, he is only the deliverer of the message.
Green Jacket Race
The race for the coveted green jacket has tightened significantly after this weekend’s event. In fact, based on the average low net per round, sneaky Flintstone Walters has a narrow lead over the ever consistent ZZ Top Borland. But, it’s a bit like the NHL point system, what appears to be a tight race is still a big gap over the rest of us. At this rate, if Murray stays away long enough he will have a chance at the green jacket.
PS Well done all you PGA golfers. The nets were all very low this past weekend so we all must have liked this course.
This note from Vic talks about the change in the Green Jacket Calculation so that score sheet is no longer showing as the Average Net will now be used, probably the same result as Total Net but still open for debate how many rounds must be played,
Steve.
Gents,
Here are the scores for last Saturday’s round at Northview Canal. You will see on the second tab of the spreadsheet that I have calculated the updated Green Jacket standings based on what I understand is the new formula (i.e. average net score for all rounds played). Combined with the good scores from last Saturday this has changed the race quite significantly. ZZ Borland is no longer in the lead, proving once again that consistency in the Pretender’s Golf Association Green Jacket race never gets truly rewarded. Instead the “Sanction King” Fred Walters has covertly slipped into a narrow lead with a net 70.33 average. ZZ is close behind at 70.75 but through the wonders of creative bookkeeping we appear to have a competitive race again this year. You might think that Kim Madsen would be way ahead with a spectacular 6-birdie round but apparently that’s not enough to get you more than a tie for fourth place and a box of tissues (at least not until Knuckles Garries makes “the call”).

Gentlemen,Just a clarification of the scoring for Saturday's Wolf event so captains in particular take notice. In order to win a point, the wolf and his partner with their total two net score must score lower than their opposing team's total two net scores - ties go to the wolf opponents and they get the point. When a player goes lone wolf ( and no girly, meek howling ) three points are available. If the lone wolf is lower than all of his opponents - no ties - then the lone wolf gets 3 points. If any of his opponents tie or beat him, each of them gets one point.
I hope this clarifies the scoring.
The premise of the game is that someone is the wolf and gets to pick their partner. As each golfer tees off, the wolf decides whether to pick that golfer as their partner, or wait for the next golfer to tee off.
When the first golfer tees off, the wolf decides if that will be their partner.
When the second golfer tees off, the wolf can no longer pick the first golfer and decides if the second golfer is their partner.
When the third golfer tees off, the wolf can no longer pick the first nor second golfer as their partner. The wolf makes a decision at this point whether to pick the third person as their partner or to go it alone as the lone wolf. The lone wolf at this point must let out a piercing wolf howl to let everyone on the course know there is a lone wolf on the prowl.
The wolf tees off last.
If the wolf picks a partner, the wolf and the partner must beat, no ties, the other two players to win the hole otherwise the other pair win the hole. (1 point each for the two winners)
If the wolf decides to be the lone wolf, the wolf's score must beat, no ties, all the other players to win the hole, otherwise the other three win the hole. (3 points to the lone wolf if he wins and none to the losers. 1 point each to the others if the lone wolf loses or ties)
Keep track of the winner(s) on each hole and add up at the points at the end. The player with the most points is the Lone Wolf winner.
* a reminder that all scores used should be net scores

Plus 2 On Pink Ball Takes Prize - Week 3
Rookie Mike Mason lead his pink ball team to victory this past Saturday at Squamish. His strategic initial team order was enough to put his team with two spares; long time member on sabbatical, Al “Mumbles” Goulding; a second Borland, “unemployed and looking for work”, Ian; and not ready for primetime, Dick Burns, across the finish line at net two over par. But that weak score proved to be enough among the three groups who finished with their pink balls still intact. Larry Brown was the first to eliminate his team from contention by losing the pink ball on the 7th hole.
Other winners on the sunny Saturday afternoon at Squamish were Blair “El Cid” Murdoch with a KP on #5 and Alex “Mr. Bean” Volpatti with his KP on #16 - two very fine shots from two marginally talented players. Fred “Flintstone” Walters was still feeling the burn from his sanctions last time out came out with an I’ll show you attitude and posted the day’s lowest net by a full two shots over the field, a very cool net 69. Low gross by a wide margin was once again, ZZ Top Borland shooting a very respectable gross 79. The second low net went to Graham deLaet Leigh with his net 71 leaving him tied with 2 others but his second low gross at 85 put him at the prize bucket.
The Race to the Green Jacket looks like it will not be a race at all. Borland further distanced himself from the field and the only players who didn’t lose ground to him this week were the 6 members who were out of town.
A desperate group of golfers imposed a sanction on the winning Mason team for slow play. This despite the fact they finished their round in 4 hrs 15 minutes and despite the fact that Burns sanctioned himself for shitty play. Albeit, they were half a hole behind the group in front of them so commendations to the rest for setting a torrid pace of play out there and commendations to the Mason group for paying up. Mumbles was heard muttering something to himself and tried to pay his debt by cheque.
The greens were lightning fast and the weather turned glorious as the day went on - another successful PGA event at Squamish. Next event is May 9th at the Canal Course at Northview.

The Return of the Pink Ball Challenge
Gentlemen,I have attached the group lists for the upcoming event this Saturday at Squamish. Let's hope the weather holds up. Our Gamesman this week has chosen the Pink Ball game. Captains of each group, please ensure you know the rules of the game so there are no more screwups at the prize bag. Since Squamish is a course where it is possible to keep your balls, it is important that the Captain keeps the net score on the pink ball so that a winning team can be determined if more than one group survives the round with their pink ball still in place. Also, record the spot where your pink ball is lost if it is lost. Remember also to keep everyone's net score.
1. The game - Pink Ball
Rules
- Each Team starts with one Pink Ball
- One player on each team must use the Pink Ball for a complete hole.
- The Pink Ball must rotate between the players on each team in the same order. 2 players will play the Pink Ball a total of 5 times each, while the other 2 players on the team will play the Pink Ball a total of 4 times each assuming they keep their ball to the end.
- The winning team will be the team that still has the Pink Ball at the end of 18 holes.
- If no team has the Pink Ball by the end of the round, the team that kept the Pink Ball in play without losing the ball for the most holes wins.
- If two teams are tied at the end of the round (either after 18 holes or some other hole where the ball was lost), then the winning team will be the one that has the best net score of the players when it was their turn to play the Pink Ball.
- Therefore, the team captain will need to record the net score of the player who played the Pink Ball on each hole.
- Teams will have no more than 2 minutes to search for their Pink Ball if the Pink Ball is hit into the rough or out of bounds. This is a public course, so we need to keep up the pace of play.
Straight Shooting. See you Saturday.

Cain’s Putter Sizzled - April 13, 2015
With a cold start to the second event of this year’s PGA tour at the Northview Ridge course, there was nothing cold about Steve Cain’s putter. His 16 Olympic points lead the team of Cain and Lyons to a sizable victory on Saturday afternoon in the coldly contested putting contest. Lyon’s 4 points was enough to put both Cain and himself at the prize bag although Cain’s 16 points was enough to make him a winner on his own. The low total number of putts on the day was 31 which showed how tough the putting conditions were or alternately, how shitty everyone was at putting. A distant second in this race to the prize table was the tag team of Brown and Grundy whose 17 points out distanced the rest of the competition. Grundy’s 5 points added to Brown was just enough to put them ahead of Cain on his own. This is the second week in a row that Grundy has made his way to the prize bag. Next event’s booby prize winner will have to give Grundy a urine test.
Saturday morning was also the welcome back to three PGA members making their first appearance of the year. Dave “Hoss” Alexander’s first event was a good one for him as he made his way to the prize bag twice, once for his incredible KP on #6 where his tee shot was off the flag and almost into the hole and for a more usual trip for Dave as he was the worst putter of the day with 39 total putts. Even being shitty has its benefits - right, Murray? Another PGA member making his season debut after several seasons’ absence was Blair “El Cid” Murdoch. El Cid being the veteran that he is knew better than to play well on his first round back after a long absence. El Cid, like most of us, was never in the running for any sort of prize - oh, neither were two of the other “winners” who got their name drawn from a hat. Welcome back, Blair. Good to have you in the fold again. Fred “BMW Tour Winner” Walters also made his season debut after having suddenly to pull out of the season opener when his wife became ill. Good to know Fred’s wife is on the mend and to have Fred back on the links. More on Flintstone later.
The day’s low net winner was the incredibly volatile Paul Killeen whose net 71 edged out last week’s winner Dale Borland’s 72. Dale “ZZ Top” Borland is well out in front of the race to the Coveted Green Jacket after the first two events and his two birdies lead the bird party parade. Despite Killeen’s incredible round, he remains well back in the Green Jacket race (as do most of us.) Grundy’s steady play has moved him up to sole possession of 2nd with Cain taking over the third spot. The rest of us are going to have to start playing some pretty good golf or someone will have to break ZZ’s arm, or this green jacket race could be over early.
The two KP winners on the day were the aforementioned, newly homeless Hoss Alexander on #6 and Richard Ostereicher on the very difficult pin placement #16 . Well done in the true game of skill, gentlemen.
Victory Was Tainted - Beer Was Not
Victory this past weekend was, however, very tainted as, for the first time in PGA history, one of our groups was disqualified for not knowing the rules. Senior member of the group, Flintstone Walters, not only didn’t remember the rules of the game and help out his rookie captain, deLaet Leigh, he had the temerity to argue the sanction imposed on the group - thus incurring a doubling of the sanction. He even lacked the self discipline to leave well enough alone and almost received a further sanction. He totally forgot that increases in sanctions go up exponentially. Flintstone did not even click in that his incredibly high number of Olympic points were way out of the norm as he thought every putt he sank was worth points, even if it was his third one on that green. The rest of us, however, were very appreciative of the beer that the prehistoric one bought for all. Who knows who would have truly won this event if only that group was clued in for the day.
Also worthy of mention was the sanction that rookie deLaet received for intentionally aiming his ball at Huge Taylor and then missing him over his head. How could anyone miss a target that large? daLaet’s only response was “the sight of him frightened me.” Thanks for the beer, JR. Better aim next time.

Dale Borland Grabs Early Lead at 2015 PGA Season Opener
This year’s PGA season opener caught a break with the weather after heavy rains all week before the Saturday round then heavy rains starting again Saturday evening after the round. But the rains held off and the day turned out to be an great day to start off our season. So a somewhat soggy Hazelmere with a little wind provided quite a challenge for the season opener. Dale Borland’s very solid net 71 provided him with the day’s low net and the subsequent trip to Larry Brown’s prize bag. The handicap Nazi, Vic Grundy, obviously has done a good job with keeping on top of everyone’s handicap since Dale’s net 71 was the highest winning net in recent memory. It was either that or everyone was afraid to shoot too low and face the endless ridicule that goes along with playing too well.
The team event (Step Ladder) was captured by the highly esteemed foursome of Burns, Grundy, Killeen and Overgaard led by a magnificent 40 on the back 9 by Stretch Grundy. Killeen and Overgaard did their very best to keep this group away from the prize bag but Grundy would have none of it.
The KP prizes were won by the two members of the winning team - Burns and Grundy. Obviously, every part of their games were on fire. And the formerly dormant long drive prize was won by Dale Borland which just goes to show there is a connection between driving well and scoring well. This competition may once again become dormant so enjoy your prize while you got it, Dale. Finally, the pink ball, “why is he in our group” prize went to our most inconsistent golfer Murray “I’m So Bad” White with a high net score of 87. Murray should stop taking lessons from Golf Tec and start getting mad on the course like the rest of us. If he was a real gentlemen, he would share his prize with the other members of his foursome. Even though Murray needs the balls, the others felt the pain. No more trying to be awful, Murray!
A big welcome to our new members this year, Digby “Graham DeLaet” Leigh Jr, “Mighty” Mike Mason, and Drew “I’m” Lyon ( a very appropriate name for a golfer) who are great additions to this highly esteemed group and who had the very good sense not to make a trip to the prize table in their initial event. Someone must have warned them because anyone that smart will not fit in with this group. Blair Murdoch was so concerned about even the remotest possibility of a trip to the prize bag, he refused to show up. Blair is not officially a rookie since this is a return to the PGA for him. Squeezing the membership dues out of him is a sure sign that the economy has returned to boom times. And Dave Alexander was also MIA. Apparently, he was house hunting on the Island. He is looking for one that has a birdie. Very capable fill-ins for that missing duo were reliable Hugh “Huge” Taylor, and David “Dr. Buffoon” Overgaard.
They also are experienced spares as they refrained from a visit to the prize table in the hope of being invited back. Fred “Flintstone” Walters was forced to withdraw at the last minute on Saturday morning because his wife was taken seriously ill and he had to take her to the hospital. Under normal circumstances, this would not be a significant enough excuse to miss an event, but because we like Freddy so much, we will not sanction him this time. And we wish his lovely wife a complete and speedy recovery!
The next event is scheduled for April 11, at the Northview Ridge Course with an early first tee time of 9:18. Let’s hope that the golfing weather gods will continue to shine on us. See you all there.

Gentlemen,
The excitement is building, the sense of anticipation is evident; now all we need is for the weatherman to cooperate with our season opening event one week from today at Hazelmere. Practice time is running out and the real race for the Coveted Green Jacket is about to begin. First tee off is set for 11:00 am so everyone please be there half an hour early so that we can make sure everything is in order.
Here is a reminder of the groupings, the captains (in bold) and the game for the day.

1. Step Ladder (replacement for Vienna)
Here's a simple game but one that requires the whole team to be playing well, at least on four of the holes.
1. This is another net-score game, but the number of net scores that are used for the team score changes every hole.
2. The total number of net scores progresses in a stepladder fashion, then back down the stepladder, and repeat the process through all 18 holes. The team with the best total net score wins. It looks like this:

Things to Remember for our 2015 Season
1. Pace of Play Pace of play is very important to the continued acceptance of our group at local courses so please make sure you keep up with the group who is playing in front of you. Failure to maintain an adequate pace of play will result in sanctions imposed by the executive committee. 2. Lost Balls All lost balls are to be played as a lateral hazard - that is, don’t hit a provisional just go to the area the ball is lost, look for it briefly and, failing to find it, drop a ball near where it entered the bush and play from there, incurring a 1 stroke penalty. 3. Balls in a hazard If you hit a ball into a hazard like a pond, drop a ball close to the point of entry to the hazard - not where it landed - and take a one stroke penalty. 4. Maximum Strokes While keeping an accurate score is important both for maintaining your correct handicap and for us to award prizes after the round accordingly, pace of play trumps hacking and whacking endlessly. So after you have taken more than 8 strokes on any given hole or you are holding up the rest of the group, pick up your ball and record an 8. If the recording of the 8 means you receive a prize for low net when it really should have been higher, then do the honourable thing as a golfer and lie about your score. 5. Handicaps No one in this esteemed group shall receive a handicap of greater than 32 - no one shall be deemed to be that shitty. And no one shall receive 2 strokes on any par 3. 6. Sanctions Sanctions can be suggested to the executive committee for any types of infringements on the rules of golf or the proper behavioural etiquite expected of this esteemed group at any time by anyone within this group. Those suggestions will be reviewed and evaluated by the committee and if deemed appropriate, sanctions will be imposed on the guilty party or parties. 7. Posting Don’t forget to post all your scores on your handicapping website shortly after completing each round so as to keep accurate and up to date handicaps (and avoid sanctions.) |

Gentlemen,
The robins were out in full force, the sun made its appearance, Northlands put out a call for marshals this weekend and your PGA executive met this morning to firm up some business for the upcoming season. Pull those golf clubs out of storage and start to get ready. Before that, however, I will bring you all up to date with what we have discussed and determined.
First of all, we do not have enough players signed up to give us 5 groups but we have enough for more than 4 groups. We have 17 ready to go; Kim has someone who wants to commit and we may have another person who wants to join. So we have 18 commitments and another potential. We need to sign up at least one more person and possibly 2. So if you know of anyone who might be interested, get in touch with Paul right away. ( I will be in Mexico for the next two weeks preparing for the upcoming season.)
Second, your prize coordinators have been busy collecting prizes for our weekly events and those may contain a few items of interest to some of you. Those prizes will be based on your weekly contributions of $10 each. This year we are not using any of that weekly prize money to go towards a charitable donation. If there is any money left over on the tables after our post match beers, that money will go towards a donation.
Third, we are in the process of procuring trophies for second and third place losers during the season long race for the Coveted Green Jacket. And if there is a charitable tax donation this year, the tax receipt will go to the winner of that coveted green jacket.
Finally, Paul has confirmed all the tee times and dates for the upcoming season (except one location which he was hoping to confirm today) so you can put them in your calendars and you can use them when recruiting new members. I will list those dates and times below.
28-Mar Morgan Creek 12:00
11-Apr Northview Ridge 9:18
25-Apr Squamish 10:36
09-May Northview Canal 10:20
23-May Northlands 10:30
06-Jun Talking Rock 1:00
07-Jun Talking Rock 10:00
20-Jun ??
27-Jun Northlands 10:30
Calcutta
All for now. Get busy and find someone else who would enjoy this group of faintly talented, highly competitive, remotely interesting group of reprobates who like to golf and perhaps have a post round beer.
Your Exec.
PS Doug Player has very generously offered to host the yearend BBQ so you can all relax for this year but your name might come out of the hat for next year. Thank you, Shakey. I take back most of those disparaging remarks that I said about you!
PPS I am hoping that Steve will continue to maintain our website. Steve?
PPPS This email list contains the names of this year's regulars and all the potential spares. Kim, could you forward this email to your pal. I don't have his email info.

Gentleman,
I trust everyone is relaxing after a very focused golf season with the PGA and you are all practicing diligently to prepare for next season. In the meantime your trusted executive has been meeting to review the past season while it is still somewhat fresh in our minds and reviewing the results of the survey that was sent out a couple of weeks ago. I thought I would like to keep you informed about the essence of our discussion so you can see what direction we leaning toward for next season. One of the results of that meeting was the budget summary that was sent out to most of you from Paul then audited by the firm of Grundy Grundy, Grundy and Grundy; then secondarily audited by the firm of Volpatti and Self Associates before the two firms completely distanced themselves from any of the arithmetic but accepted it regardless. For those of you who did not receive that summary, I will attach another copy for your edification.
Here is a general summary of what we discussed at our meeting this past week.
1. Handicaps
Handicaps continue to be an area of big concern as they are with all golfers. Even though we are getting much much better with maintaing accurate handicaps, we want everyone to join MyScorecard.com then join the PGA clubhouse (membership is only $10/yr). Then each member must keep handicaps current by posting all scores immediately after every round. Failure to comply will result in the assessment of a PGA handicap and sanctions. This just makes everything much simpler for Vic.
Members will begin the 2015 campaign with their respective 2014 Calcutta handicaps.
2. Road Trip
The surveys indicated everyone was quite happy with the golf course at Crown Isle and very happy with the accommodations but they were not very happy with the hassle of the ferry. So Paul will investigate the costs associated with a Tripper Cup road trip next year to one of the following: Talking Rock (Chase), Rivershore (South Thompson Inn), Ramada in Penticton and Semiahmoo.
3. Rounds/Green Jacket
Next year we would like to add another round to our play to have 9 rounds instead of 8 with a possible increase in fees of $50. With this we would have the Tripper Cup be only a match play event a with scores not counting in the race for the Green Jacket. All other scores would be used in calculating the Green Jacket throwing out the high and low net for each player. Still to be determined what scores are thrown out for players missing a round (possibly eliminate one middle score for a missed round and no elimination of scores for 2 missed rounds and no eligibility for the Green Jacket if more than 2 rounds are missed.)
4. Prizes
Generally, people were happy with the way prizes were allocated. (Remember, a shortage of prizes at the yearend was a result of all regulars getting a PGA shirt.) However, there was a push to have more prizes.
5. Charity
The surveys indicated that most members were happy with having us involved with a charity in some way or other. They were particularly happy to use the leftover funds from the post game table as the sole source of our donations and not to make fundraising the reason for our golf. However, there is still some thought to elimination of the charity and use the extra funds to put on the table for the next round) For now we will stick with the leftover funds only to go to a charity. To go along with this item, there was some concern raised about the last group and the non drinkers feeling pressured to pay more than their share of the group bill. Everyone needs to keep in mind not to feel individual pressure to pay more than what you rightfully owe but you also should cover the cost of your share which does include a tip. As long as it is not the same individuals who come in last each week, the sharing of the beer and appies does work out over the course of the year. Bottom line, don't pay more than you owe if you don't want to. As long as we have enough to cover the bill and a generous tip at the end of the day, everyone is happy.
6. Courses
Next year we will continue to have Northlands as the site for the Calcutta. Squamish will be played only once. Northview as a possible course to play twice. No play at Kings Links and other possibilities to be Morgan Creek, Riverway, Mayfair Lakes, UBC.
Respectfully,
Your Committee via Dick.
